SERVPRO Glen Cove / Jericho understands how important your business is. Let us help you out.
Choosing Our Inspection and Water Damage Restoration
Large Loss recovery teams like ours must respond fast when water disasters occur in office buildings. We have multiple tools capable of managing effects on a grander scale, such as several inches of water across the busiest areas of the structure.
How Did the Damage Occur?
Starting water damage restoration in Glen Cove offices means first identifying what caused these problems in the first place. Office settings have several plausible routes to this kind of threat, which can include:
- Leaking pipes
- Leaking HVAC
- Broken fixtures
- Flooding
- Damaged sprinkler system
Containing Water Migration
Offices are often known for their wide-open layouts, which can be a challenge when this building floor is contending with migrating moisture. We must work fast to contain these disasters with physical barriers, extractors, drying tools, and other equipment in our inventory.
Can You Keep Your Doors Open?
It is important to consider how to keep your doors open to your customers after a loss. When you can isolate the cause of the water damage and contain its spread, it is feasible that portions of your business can continue to operate while cleanup gets underway. If you can limit the restoration area to a few offices or a part of your work floor, operations can continue during the recovery, even at a smaller capacity.
Services You Need Right Away
There are specific steps that are necessary to start as soon as possible that have the greatest impact on the functionality of your office building. One of these services is controlled demolition. When burst pipes or similar circumstances occur within structural cavities, there is little to slow the spread of this water beyond drywall in vertical wall systems and a drop ceiling assembly with its respective tiles. We can collect and discard damaged materials to allow direct access to the damaged plumbing to ensure its prompt repair.
Water damage restoration for an office building requires fast action and the right tools to overcome widespread loss effects quickly. You can count on our Large Loss team to help when disasters strike. Call our SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho team at (516) 671-1919.

- Advanced air movers that swiftly draw in and push out impacted air, exchanging it for fresh air
- Innovative air scrubbers clean dirty interior air by filtering harmful gasses and odorous particles out of it
Additionally, our technicians employ HVAC cleaning systems, which have agitators, a strong vacuum, and a filtration network, to clean up and prevent airborne particles from spreading. All this works to remove contaminants from your home’s interior air. This cleaning is just the first step in eliminating fire-related smells from your residence and returning your property to its pre-fire condition.
What Does SERVPRO Do to Neutralize Remaining Smells?
SERVPRO professionals use additional tools and measures to counteract, mask, or seal off odors remaining after their initial ventilation procedures. These actions make your home smell more than it did before the fire in Glen Head. Some of the tools and techniques we do this with are:
- Vaportek systems that neutralize smell-emitting particles with aerosolized natural oils
- Ozone generators to counteract odors with ozone gas

Steps for Drying Drywall After Water Damage in Your Jericho Residence
8/17/2022 (Permalink)
SERVPRO knows no lengths when it comes to water damage in your Jericho home.
Here We Walk You Through The Steps of Your Jericho Water Damage.
A leaking pipe can cause the drywall in your home to get damp. The porous material of the drywall can absorb moisture rapidly and wick it up into the wall. The wetness can spread behind the trim, bleed under baseboards and saturate insulation. Although drywall is not load-bearing, its condition still affects the surrounding structures.
Soggy drywall can turn into a food source for mold colonies. To deal with the water damage in your Jericho residence, you can hire SERVPRO water damage restoration technicians (WRTs). You can take these following steps to prevent the situation from getting worse:
- Stop the source of the leak immediately.
- Remove paintings and wall hangings from the affected walls. If the walls have wallpaper, it may be necessary to remove the paper.
- Check the wall or ceiling insulation. Remove and dry the insulation beginning from the ceiling to the floor. If the insulation is soaked, you can dispose of it.
- Remove baseboards and molding to ensure that the drywall has proper ventilation. This can prevent moisture from getting trapped behind the molding and baseboard.
- Increase circulation of air in your home by opening doors and windows and blowing fans on the damp arrears until the walls are dry.
Spotting damp areas on wall surfaces is easy. However, it is difficult to determine if the drywall below the surface is wet. It is impossible to rely on the eyes alone to identify subsurface damage. Our technicians use thermal imaging cameras to find the moisture problem. If there are only one or two layers of paint on the drywall, it cannot interfere with the dry-out process of the wall surface. However, if a wall has high-gloss enamel, vinyl wallpaper, or more than a single layer of wallboard, it can take longer to dry.
Our SERVPRO technicians have expertise in drying any wall. We can establish an initial environment for satisfactory drying. Our team can manipulate temperature and humidity levels to create optimal drying conditions. For instance, we can place air movers and dehumidifiers near the surface of the walls to dry them before mold sets in.
If the walls do not dry effectively, we can drill holes into the surface to help airflow in the space between the wall studs (cavity). When air flows into the cavity, the rate of evaporation increases, and this expedites drying. Our technicians can also improve drying efforts further by using portable heaters to warm the surface of the walls.
If a water leak has caused your drywall to get damp, SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho can help you dry the affected walls thoroughly. Call us any time at (516) 671-1919 for drying services in Glen Cove, Glen Head, or Oyster Bay. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.
Proper Dehumidification during Water Mitigation in Glen Cove Businesses

Water damage? SERVPRO's IICRC trained team can come to the rescue!
SERVPRO Eases Water Restoration for Glen Cove
Most of the items in your Glen Cove office are made from diverse materials with different vulnerabilities to moisture. Some swell, stain, smell, or rust when kept in a high-moisture environment. Including a sound dehumidification plan in your water mitigation efforts is essential since it effectively removes moisture trapped in materials and the air.
Dehumidification can be a final step during water mitigation in Glen Cove properties, or you can incorporate it right from the beginning. The process works best with other procedures, such as enhanced evaporation by setting up air movers within the property. Our SERVPRO technicians help assess the dehumidification requirements for your property.
Crucial considerations for dehumidification:
- The grains per pound rating of the equipment used
- The dehumidification technology equipment uses
- The temperature levels in the house
Dehumidification is a modification process that helps water mitigation by changing moisture physically and then transporting it away from the wet structure. Two primary technologies are used to facilitate this process. A device can use chemicals to draw in moisture from the air or use temperature changes by cooling the air to the dew point allowing the water to condense into a liquid. Devices that use chemical processes are known as desiccants, while those that rely on temperature changes are called refrigerants.
GPP Rating
The level of vapor in the air is measured in grains per pound. On the other hand, the speed of vapor flow through materials is measured in grains per hour. Understanding the implications of GPP rating is essential when choosing dehumidification equipment for successful water mitigation. SERVPRO has IICRC-certified Structural Drying Technicians who readily understand these technical aspects, thus choosing the right equipment and balancing them with other restoration steps such as temperature control.
How heat affects water restoration:
- Heat boosts the air's capacity to hold water
- When cooled, air releases moisture leading to condensation
- Heating wet materials break vapor barriers
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho expertly manages all aspects of water mitigation, dealing with any damage "Like it never even happened." Call us at (516) 671-1919.

Much of our success in this industry niche focuses on having the right equipment, personnel, and products to remove flood damage from Glen Cove homes. As homeowners believe that they can address the cleaning needs of their home after a flood loss, many property owners do not realize how hazardous lingering moisture and an elevated concentration of microbes on a surface can become. For this reason, our team relies on the dominant line of cleansers, disinfectants, and sporicides SERVPRO has developed to maintain a competitive edge in the field.
Because mold damage can develop and spread within 48 hours, our water restoration technicians and our remediation specialists can apply antimicrobial solutions to structural elements that could become affected. What To Expect From Professional Water Damage Remediation In Glen Head
When you notice signs of harm caused by water in your Glen Head home, it is possible the problem has existed for some time. Supply and waste plumbing lines are concealed behind walls, under floors, and above ceilings. Small leaks eventually turn into significant losses. The response required to return your home to pre-water loss condition might prove to be more complicated than first believed. Our team has the experience to assess and respond appropriately.
It is not uncommon for an owner investigating a minor leak to discover significant water damage in their Glen Head home. The extent of harm to flooring or cabinets in your kitchen or bathroom can be extensive, with pockets of water trapped under fixtures or entrenched in several layers of subflooring. Often secondary damage such as mold growth flagged by its distinctive smell is your first alert of severe water troubles.
SERVPRO helps with the aftermath of this unwanted surprise. Our technicians master a variety of courses from the Institute of Inspection Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) in preparation for assisting residential property owners with water damage and structural drying.
Our technicians employ sensitive moisture meters and thermal imaging to locate the hidden water damage. Removing toe kickboards allows SERVPRO crews access to the areas under vanities in bathrooms or cabinets in kitchens to expose spaces where water pooled. We use powerful wanded extractors to reach and remove the puddled water and use research-based psychrometry (drying) strategies to pull moisture out of porous materials such as subflooring, wooden cabinets, drywall, and framing.
The IICRC-approved Applied Structural Drying (ASD) course completed by some of our crew readies SERVPRO employees to achieve the balance needed among the elements of air movement, temperature, and dehumidification that results in efficient moisture reduction. We periodically check the moisture concentration in the structural components and fixtures during the drying process to ensure the materials eventually return to normal levels.

Fire damage can interrupt your Glen Cove business for weeks or even months. Fires impact every business element like the building, tools, supplies, products, and people. SERVPRO ensures that smoke and soot cleaning is done on time so you can resume business operations as soon as possible.
Fire restoration professionals help Glen Cove business owners secure and move any salvageable valuables. Computers and other electronics or documents may be prone to further damage from the fire residues, so salvaging and documentation are essential steps. We work closely with your insurer to guide you in proceeding with the claim. The insurer might want to inspect the items, so we wait for their approval before we begin restoration.
Various Damages Fire Can Cause
- Soiling from smoke and soot
- Moisture or chemical damage by fire suppressors
- Damaged finishes from charring
Cleaning Residue Stains
Smoke and soot damage escalates quickly, and if given time, it causes yellow stains on walls. The acidity in soot begins to tarnish or stain metal within hours. If no measures are taken in weeks, the soot permeating building materials leads to corrosion.
SERVPRO considers the different types of surfaces when cleaning soot from walls and ceilings. Some sections may require dry cleaning methods where we use a sponge to wipe. On the other hand, surfaces with oily soot residue respond effectively to wet cleaning methods with a high-alkaline detergent.
Methods of Cleaning Walls and Ceilings
- Wet cleaning
- Wiping with dry cleaning sponges
- Peroxide active cleaning
- HEPA vacuum cleaning

SERVPRO Strategies for Water Removal after Flooding-Related Power Outages
Extreme weather has many consequences, including loss of power and property loss from heavy rains, and building damage. When flooding enters your residence or commercial building, it is crucial that the removal of the water occurs quickly and thoroughly. If flood water lingers inside for even a few hours, progressive damage to structural components and content increases the devastation and the expenses for restoration.
A challenge these property owners face is how to remove the water pictured when flood damage in Glen Cove causes power outages. Sump pumps without battery backup cease evacuating water when the electricity goes out, exposing them to the same risk as buildings without a sump system. Wet vacuums need a plug-in and are not designed to remove the enormous quantities of water flooding can deposit in a basement or lower level.
SERVPRO plans for electrical outages during flood water removal by investing in equipment that uses alternative energy sources. The risk of electrocution in a wet basement filled with appliances as pictured is also significant, driving home the need for a safer way to get the water out of the flooded property.
Submersible pumps are highly efficient in diverting floodwaters out of a property. SERVPRO uses gas-power models that require no electricity, although other types use extension cords to gain power from an outside generator. Our crew members closely monitor the pumps, ensuring they are positioned beneath the water and moved deeper periodically if necessary during the project. We follow local regulations when disposing of the floodwaters exiting through attached hoses.
When the water level is less than two inches, SERVPRO turns to truck-mounted extraction units. Our service vehicles stock both water removal devices and power generation options to clean up remaining water despite electricity shut-offs that last hours or even days or weeks. The wanded extractors we use are powerful but flexible enough to get into tight places where water might be hiding.
SERVPRO can complete structural drying using our alternative power generators for the air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers we employ to transfer absorbed moisture into the air as vapor. Our decades of experience in flood remediation means we know how to get the job done even when external factors like a power outage make things more complicated.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho has the expertise and equipment to manage flood water removal needs even when the power grid is down. Call us day or night at (516) 671-1919 for rapid recovery from a water disaster.
How Do Homeowners Get Mold Out Of Their Glen Cove Homes?
5/17/2022 (Permalink)
SERVPRO is prepared with restoration equipment and experienced technicians.
Call SERVPRO to Remove Mold Colonies and Return Glen Cove Homes to a Safe Condition
So Why SERVPRO Restore My Home? Glen Cove homes need more than a pump sprayer of bleach, a scrapper, and a can of paint. SERVPRO has extensively trained personnel and a deep inventory of cleaning and antimicrobial agents and industrial-grade equipment to remediate mold and the effects it has on area residences.
Is Remediation the Same as Eliminating Mold?
No. In their inactive state, mold spores are very common and can be found in every home. Mold remediation in Glen Cove is needed when spores come into contact with water and begin to grow and expand throughout the house. Once called to a residence, our technicians quickly inspect for the location of the mold and the source of water, then get started with their process:
- Wipe down surfaces – They use dry sponges to wipe the mold off surfaces. For thicker and wet layers of mold, technicians use a mild anti-bacterial cleaner to break them up for easier removal.
- Remove water – Our teams dry up every drop of water they can find near the mold. Once they remove it with sponges or extraction wands for more significant amounts, the active spores dry up and return to their inert, harmless state.
- Examine surfaces for mold damage – Spores can extend root-like structures called hyphae, which penetrate drywall, wood, and other materials to use as food sources. To remove these colonies, technicians use sanders to remove a thin surface layer to get to the mold. For drywall, they have to replace compromised panels.
- Application of sprays or foggers to exterminate spores and colonies

Water spilling from a high point such as the ceiling or a room upstairs can affect many contents, including electronics, upholstery, and other furniture. Reducing the period of exposure for such items can minimize the damages caused. Our SERVPRO technicians use plastic sheets to create containments over contents preventing severe damage. We also extract water fast from affected areas using water extractors and other sophisticated equipment.
Floor materials such as asphalt tiles maintain a good bond with concrete even after water damage, so cleaning the white or gray areas on the surface should be enough. However, such tiles or the glues used may contain asbestos, so it is essential to follow proper safety procedures during restoration. We certify our SERVPRO technicians in handling hazardous materials, so they should restore your property without any difficulties. For wooden subfloors, warping and other forms of deterioration might complicate the restoration process, so we use non-penetrating moisture meters to determine the moisture levels in the subfloor before embarking on restorative processes.
If the water from the incident affects furnishings, problems such as spots, cracking, and weakening of joints can develop. Such problems mostly affect upholstery and wooden items. Our SERVPRO technicians can refinish affected items. However, we evaluate the repair cost compared to replacing the item first, ensuring you get the most cost-effective solution.
When there is a water loss in your Glen Cove, Glen Head, or Oyster Bay property, call SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho to assist. You can reach us at (516) 671-1919 at any time.

Get Efficient Commercial Flood Damage Cleanup For Your Glen Cove Department Store
Department stores have a significant stronghold in American consumerism and are the anchor stores of shopping complexes and malls. They provide consumers with various services and products in a one-stop shopping format. Flash flooding can cause water to enter your department store. It can lead to significant financial losses if consumer goods such as furniture, clothing, home appliances, housewares, toys, hardware, and cosmetics, among others, get ruined.
The floodwater can also ruin the floors, walls, and other structures. If there is commercial flood damage in your Glen Cove department store, you need experienced restoration specialists to return the establishment to its previous condition safely and quickly. SERVPRO is a trusted leader in flood damage restoration. We take immediate action to minimize any negative impact on commercial property and the health of the people who work in it. We provide efficient flood cleanup services to make the destruction seem “Like it never even happened.” The steps we take to restore a commercial property include:
- Assessing the damage
- Our technicians walk through the premises with the business owner to inspect the damaged areas and prepare a scope of work for approval.
- Writing a detailed flood remediation estimate.
- After getting an approved scope of work, we write an estimate for the flood damage cleanup.
Water Extraction
If you approve the estimate, our experts can proceed with the water extraction process and removal of damp contents for disposal or salvaging. Our Water Damage Restoration Technicians (WRT) use portable or truck-mounted pumps to remove standing water. Floodwater can enter the basement of your department store quickly, and it could contain mud and other debris. We can remove the items in the basement that have not sustained damage, take them to the upper floors and then remove the sludge and floodwater.
Sanitization
Standing floodwater and flooded damp materials are breeding grounds for microorganisms like bacteria, viruses, and mold. These microorganisms can cause health problems to the people working in the department store long after the flooding incident. We use EPA-registered disinfectants to prevent microbial growth.
Drying of the Flooded Space
Our technicians set up a combination of air movers and dehumidifiers in the building to ensure that the entire structure dries appropriately. The machines must run continuously for several days. Our crew monitors and documents the drying conditions of a building regularly. We write readings for temperature, relative humidity, and moisture content and evaluate them to see if drying goals are reached.
Removing Odors
Floodwater can bring unpleasant odors into your department store, and they can affect the shopping experience of your customers. At SERVPRO, we use different strategies to deal with flood odors, including pairing agents and odor removal equipment such as air scrubbers and hydroxyl generators.
With many years of experience in flood damage restoration, the team at SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho possesses the capacity and knowledge to complete challenging projects. Contact us at (516) 671-1919 for immediate help.
What Might Interfere With Fire Restoration at My Glen Head Home?
3/4/2022 (Permalink)
The first step to resolving fire damage is calling your local trained professionals at SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho.
SERVPRO Helps Glen Head Homeowners with Equipment and Skills to Tackle Fire Damage
Inconveniences from property fires in Glen Head vary greatly depending on the source or the response mounted after the fire. The inconvenience is greater if you cannot carry out proper restoration since you continue enduring problems such as bad odor and deeply soiled surfaces. The structure and contents also continue deteriorating, increasing the overall costs you have to bear.
You can request help from a professional to ensure fire restoration at your Glen Head home progresses unhindered. Professional teams like SERVPRO are better prepared since restoring properties affected by fires is part of our daily work.
Some Issues That Interfered with Restoration Include:
- Lack of equipment
- Limited skills
- Emotional attachment to the loss
- Limited workforce
Restoring fire damage takes everyday actions like cleaning, demolition and rebuilding, and odor management, among others. However, accomplishing these processes takes special skills and equipment. For example, cleaning soot from unique surfaces such as acoustic tiles without ruining them is not easy. Also, removing destroyed structural materials can lead to unnecessary destruction of otherwise salvageable materials. Better skills and equipment eliminate these challenges easily. Our SERVPRO technicians use Peroxide-Active cleaning when dealing with delicate surfaces like acoustic tiles. Blast cleaning with a medium like sodium bicarbonate simplifies cleaning unfinished surfaces like trusses, frames, and joists.
Human Factors in Fire Restoration
Sometimes the fire restoration of your home might take longer, not because there is a technical problem. Human factors such as limited help from the people around you can delay the process. Also, if you are over-attached to the damaged possessions, you may have difficulty completing the restoration. SERVPRO provides several technicians to tackle various tasks, thus expediting restoration. Our decisions are also based on technical evaluations or advice from other professionals such as insurance adjusters.
With help from SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho, you get practical solutions for any obstacles that would hinder fire restoration. Call us at (516) 671-1919. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.
Does the Source Affect Fire Damage Restoration Processes in Glen Cove Properties?
2/16/2022 (Permalink)
Don’t let fire damage overwhelm you, call the professionals at SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho.
Examining the Source in Glen Cove Properties Helps SERVPRO Resolve Fire Challenges
Although it may not seem so, a fire can start in any section of your business premises. Various things you use in your daily operations increase fire risk, including waste materials, solvents, and heat-generating objects such as machines. Apart from causing unexpected damage at your Glen Cove premises, different fire sources also influence the work you need to do to restore the premises.
In many cases, the fire source determines its intensity, thus influencing the fire damage restoration procedures undertaken in Glen Cove properties. Since fire can be contained in good time by the fire department or an internal suppression system, intensity is not always high. Other factors related to the source can still affect restoration. An experienced restorer like SERVPRO can help you address any challenges that arise.
Challenging Aspects Connected to the Fire Source Include:
- Variations such as organic and synthetic residues
- Heat levels which range from scorching to smoldering
- Residue spread patterns
The combustion process affects materials to different levels. Incomplete combustion results in residues like soot. While soot appears as a standard black residue, its chemical properties differ depending on the burnt material. Therefore, if a fire is caused by malfunctioning electronics or other appliances made of plastics and other synthetic materials, the resulting soot is not the same as what would be produced by waste papers igniting. Soot from synthetic sources tends to be wet and smeary, thus difficult to clean.
Fires Are Hotter or Colder Than You Expect
To most people, a fire is just a fire. However, during restoration, the unique fire characteristics stand out and can impact the process. For instance, the temperatures involved as various materials ignite, affect the cleaning difficulty. Scorching temperatures result in turbulent air movements, forcing residues to collide with vertical surfaces like walls leading to splattering and penetration into the substrate. Such residues require a greater cleaning force. That is why our SERVPRO technicians use rotating brushes to agitate such surfaces.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho can conduct fire damage restoration addressing any challenging issue, “Like it never even happened.” Call us at (516) 671-1919.

SERVPRO Cleans, Refinishes, and Deodorizes Water Damaged Homes in Glen Cove
Many water leaks originate from supply pipes or wastewater disposal systems due to broken joints, burst pipes, or failed fittings. In many cases, you may need help restoring your Glen Cove home. However, you might have a hard time determining which professional to engage.
The level of water intrusion drives the choice of water restoration companies for Glen Cove homeowners. If a leak is discovered in good time and the supply is turned off at the mains, the water released might be minimal. A plumber can fix the damaged pipes and leave you to handle the cleanup. Extensive leaks require the intervention of professional restorers like SERVPRO.
The Processes Water Restoration Companies Handle Include:
- Water removal
- Cleaning
- Decontamination
- Deodorization
The ease with which water spreads from the leak source can fool you into thinking that extracting it is very simple. In many cases, the water seeps into structural materials and contents requiring special skills or tools. While the plumber has the skills to fix damaged pipes or other fittings, restoring regular water flow, only a water restoration company like SERVPRO can handle water removal decisively.
The Comprehensive Water Removal Processes
The intruding water causes material deterioration, soiling, and even bad odor. Therefore removal must address all these issues to restore preloss conditions. Robust moisture control is at the center of any removal process. Our SERVPRO crews have state-of-the-art equipment such as truck-mounted or weighted water extractors, which aid the process in different ways, including having sufficient vacuum lift or weight that squeezes out water from porous materials like carpets. Dehumidifiers are also crucial in managing humidity levels.
Cleaning affected areas before or during water removal deals with issues like staining, odors, and general soiling. Trained water restoration teams incorporate cleaning in removal processes, especially during extraction since we have specialized equipment that can heat water, mix it with detergents and agitate surfaces.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho precisely delivers what you want when looking for water restoration companies, thus addressing any problem you might be facing, “Like it never even happened.” Call us at (516) 671-1919.

How Does Deodorization Work in Fire-Damaged Glen Cove Homes?
1/27/2022 (Permalink)
Don't be a victim of fire damage. SERVPRO of Glen Cove is only a call away.
Specific Steps Are Needed to Overcome Smoke Odors in Fire Damaged Glen Cove Properties.
Fires are among the most challenging situations for restorers to overcome. Even after cleanup, lingering threats like harsh odors are an additional obstacle for experienced SERVPRO professionals to overcome.
Reducing the Severity of Open Air Smells
Fire damage restoration in Glen Cove homes can involve hundreds of cleaning and recovery decisions. When the time comes to address harsh smells throughout the property, this process begins with reducing the impact of smoke odors in open environments. Air filtration can often be one of the most direct methods for reducing harsh smells, but fire debris removal can also help.
Treating Porous Materials
Surfaces can hold harsh smoke odors. Painted drywall and other portions of ceiling and wall assemblies can allow smoke particles to absorb into the surface's pores and keep noxious smells. Even with surface cleaning tactics to remove soot and smoke residues, the odor itself might be a lingering threat to the property. When the wall is getting repainted and refinished, it is often beneficial to utilize bases like the odor-sealing paint primer in our inventory. This does not neutralize trapped odors but blocks the pores from allowing these smells to escape with changing atmospheric conditions in the future.
Deodorization Strategies for Full Neutralization
After much of the counteractant work has occurred with cleaning surfaces and removing debris, the full deodorization of remaining open areas and affected materials begins. Neutralizing odors involves several types of environmental cleaning, which can include:
- Thermal/ULV Fogging
- Ozone
- UV Cleaning with Hydroxyl Machines
Restoration professionals must provide specific deodorization strategies after smoke, and fire damage threatens homes. The movement of smoke particles and offensive odors after combustion are formidable obstacles for restorers, so our SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho team arrives with several products and tools to help. Give us a call at (516) 671-1919.

SERVPRO of Glen Cove's technicians are here for you 24/7.
Knowing the Objectives of Water Restoration in Glen Head Properties Shows The Advantage of Professional Services.
While it might seem tempting to consider DIY restoration after water damages, this is rarely feasible or advisable. Experienced professionals like ours can mitigate loss and ultimately save customers money over attempting this drying on your own. If moisture gets missed, secondary effects like mold and microbial threats could become costly developments.
How Does Standing Water Get Removed?
Water restoration companies in Glen Cove homes must first focus on standing water and pooling. Several inches of water can put immense pressure on exposed building materials, exposing the vulnerabilities of these structural elements to become overly saturated.
How Can Trapped Moisture Get Evaporated?
Water that becomes trapped in porous building materials and contents can be another focal point of our restoration professionals. The longer that water is caught in these materials, the more damage it can do. After prolonged exposure, elements like subflooring and wall assemblies become heavily structurally damaged, ultimately requiring replacement. We have special drying tools to help prevent this:
- Drying mats
- Carpet wands
- Weighted extractors
- Positive/negative pressure
Can SERVPRO Complete Repairs?
In an effort to return properties to preloss condition, some degree of build-back and reconstruction is often needed. Because our SERVPRO team has a contractor license, we can complete the demolition and the repairs in-house to save customers time and money on this phase of the restoration process.
There are many reasons that one might wish to pursue water damage restoration companies with the expertise and training that our SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho roster has. We are accredited through the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) to be leading water recovery specialists. Call today at (516) 671-1919.

What type of Mold Remediation Chemicals are Used by Professionals in Glen Head Homes?
SERVPRO techs use chemical products at various stages of the mold remediation process. While detergents might be used during the cleaning process, chemicals such as antimicrobials and fungicides prevent the regrowth of mold on cleaned surfaces.
Many chemicals are used as disinfectants to control the growth of mold in Glen Head homes. Some of these chemicals include-
- Chlorine
- Hydrogen peroxide
- Quaternary ammonium compounds (Quats)
- Phenolics
- Formaldehyde
Why do SERVPRO Techs Prefer Quaternary Ammonium Compounds?

Technicians at SERVPRO understand that combating odors after the fire and smoke damage to your Glen Cove home involves meticulous planning and spot-on execution. We use several deodorizing techniques and tools depending on the type of fire and the extent of the smoke damage.
How Does Thermal Fogging Neutralize Odors During Smoke Remediation of Your Glen Cove Home?
SERVPRO technicians use thermal fogging in your fire-damaged Glen Cove home to neutralize odors of smoke and soot particles that are lodged in tough-to-reach spots. The thermal fogger is equipment that generates a fog of a powerful deodorizing agent with the help of heat.
The technicians can recreate conditions under which the smoke particles initially penetrated the surfaces using a thermal fogger, increasing the deodorization efficiency. Once the deodorizer reaches small cracks, pores, and fibers, it neutralizes the odor-causing particles.
What are the Advantages of Thermal Fogging Over Other Deodorizing Methods?
Thermal fogging offers several advantages over other deodorizing methods, including ultra-low volume (ULV) fogging. Some of the benefits include-
- Produces deodorant particles as small as 0.5 microns enabling them to penetrate deeper
- Removes odors from a variety of surfaces, including walls, floors, and fabric
- Faster than ULV fogging

Why do Ice Dams Cause Ceiling Leaks in Glen Cove Homes?
Ice dams can promote water damage to the ceiling of your Glen Cove home resulting in leaks requiring professional restoration by SERVPRO experts. The ice dams form when the heat collected in the attic warms up the roof and the accumulated snow melts. The water freezes and forms a solid ice dam as the eaves are still cold. As the snow continues to melt, the meltwater backs up behind the dam and starts to flow under the shingles, causing leakage requiring water damage restoration by SERVPRO techs.
SERVPRO’s Advice for Preventing Ice Dams From Forming in the First Place
It is possible to prevent ice dams from forming if you take some simple steps suggested by SERVPRO techs to take care of your roof-
- Rake the excess snow from your roof
- Insulate your roofs with closed-cell spray foam, filling the space between the rafters
- Improve the ventilation in the attic to keep the roof cold

Why Do Glen Cove Kitchen Cabinets Sometimes Need Removal During Water Mitigation?
12/8/2021 (Permalink)
Water damage to your kitchen is a job for IICRC certified technicians of SERVPRO. We use the latest technology and equipment for every project.
SERVPRO Techs Use Advanced Methods for Water Damage Remediation in Glen Cove Properties
Glen Cove kitchens are a frequent site for water damage. The amount of appliances that use water and the plumbing makes it a prime place for leaks and other issues. When the need for water cleanup occurs, the cabinets are frequently part of the issue.
During water mitigation in a Glen Cove kitchen, SERVPRO technicians use their equipment to find all water locations within the worksite. Many homeowners make a mistake when they have water under their cabinets by cleaning out the cupboards and opening the doors, expecting them to dry. This can lead to seepage into the subfloor and bigger issues because the problem is underneath, and this requires that the toe kicks get removed for proper extraction. Another contributing factor is that laminate and other floor types often get installed around the cabinets rather than underneath, creating a perfect environment for seepage. The techs bring portable pumps with long-reaching wands to get underneath and remove as much of the moisture as possible.
Other actions during water cleanup include:
- Scoping to determine the scale of the water damage in the kitchen
- Use of infrared cameras to "see" areas of water collection through temperature changes
- Determination through inspection to see if cabinets can remain in place or require removal
SERVPRO technicians avoid removing cabinets and fixtures whenever possible during the restoration services; however, sometimes, it is necessary to ensure the walls and floors attain drying goals. The drying equipment used standardly are air movers; however, to force air directly underneath the cabinets through the removed toe kicks. SERVPRO techs create tubing using heavy gauge plastic and utilize specialized drying equipment such as the Injecti-Dry system to target these areas with warm, dry airflow. In cases where the cabinet interiors deteriorate due to moisture exposure, the technicians may need to remove the structures to dry the backing walls and flooring underneath.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho at (516) 671-1919 brings professional water mitigation to Glen Cove kitchens for restoration services available 24/7.

When your water heater start leaking water, you need the help of SERVPRO. Our water damage specialists are here for the help you need for your home.
SERVPRO Helps Extract Moisture, Perform Water and Remove Deteriorated Materials Damage Repairs as Needed in Glen Head Properties
The average size water heater in a Glen Head home runs between 30 and 55 gallons. Stored in the tank, it does not look like a lot of water; if the tank fails and releases the water, many gallons on the floor can look daunting for where to even start for the water clean up.
When SERVPRO handles water damage removal in Glen Head homes, the technicians act quickly to trace the path of the water and begin the extraction process; when tens of gallons of water get released suddenly in a home, the placement of where the tank plays a role in where the water goes and the areas of the house that received the damage.
Suppose the tank is in a utility room on the bottom level of the home. In that case, there is nowhere for the water to drain off, and the subfloor often gets saturated, requiring removal of the carpet, tile, or another flooring type so the substrate can get dried. In older properties, the tank may be located in a crawlspace or attic. In the cases of a crawlspace, encapsulation may be needed to dry it out and prevent further moisture buildup. Attics can ruin the insulation and ceiling below from the drip-through of the water. SERVPRO technicians can handle all of these situations with their knowledge and experience.
Once the water gets extracted and the affected areas dried, the techs scope the rooms again to ensure no signs of moisture remain and the property verifies as attaining drying goals. The extensive restoration training of the technicians enables them to:

Can SERVPRO's Fire Restoration Methods Save Furnishings in Glen Cove Homes?

Post-fire damage is a hard task to handle. SERVPRO fire damage restoration techs have the equipment for any size disaster.
SERVPRO Techs Have Advanced Applications for Assisting Glen Cove Properties to Recover After Fire Damage
The first time a homeowner sees their Glen Cove home post-fire damage, it can seem overwhelming. Favorite pieces of furniture and items with sentimental value can be covered in soot and smoke residues. It is vital to engage professional fire cleanup to ensure that the property owners have the best outcome for reuse rather than a destination for disposal.
Glen Cove residents rely on SERVPRO for fire restoration services because they know the technicians have extensive training for handling all types of cleanup post-fire. One of the main ways DIY cleaning ruins items is by using the incorrect cleaning method of the smoke damage present. For example, a hardwood end table may have escaped heat and water damage from the fire and extinguishing efforts, then get ruined beyond the restoration point due to a homeowner using the incorrect cleaning application on the furniture.
Careful Inspection is Paramount
The technicians know how to inspect the furniture and determine if it is structurally sound and the nature of the smoke damage removal needed. In some cases, the piece may require refinishing for reuse, but it will not have any signs of the previous fire damage or associated odors.
SERVPRO technicians never guess when handling the removal of smoke damage. They use both visual inspection and testing to determine the residue types present and the materials that make up the surface getting cleaned. Solvent-based cleaning agents may be necessary to remove some types of residues, but this type of solution may be too harsh for some surfaces, and another type of method needs to get used. The top-level cleaning methods used for soot and smoke damage on furniture are:
- Dry cleaning
- Wet cleaning
- Immersion
- Agitation

SERVPRO Techs Have Comprehensive Training in Restoring Glen Head Furniture Post-Fire Damage

SERVPRO has years of experience handling fire damage restoration in Glen Head properties. A big mistake that homeowners attempt is trying to remove soot from their furnishings. Applying a liquid to dry smoke can ruin the surface by driving the particles into the item rather than cleaning it. Also, scrubbing thick, stuck-on wet smoke can mar a surface.
The technicians have extensive training in the proper removal of all kinds of smoke damage. The SERVPRO technicians have a systematic process that includes:
- Testing residues to determine the type
- Choosing the appropriate cleaning method
- Ensuring no odorous soot gets left behind
Hardwood furnishings and countertops may look as though they need to be removed; however, if these articles do not have heat or water damage, they can often have the potential for restoration and reuse by the homeowner. The technicians use their skills to assist Glen Head homeowners in realizing as few replacement purchases as possible.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho at (516) 671-1919 provides the local Glen Head community with fire damage restoration services. The trained technicians are available 24/7 to handle all types and sizes of damage from house fires.

Many Extractors and Water Removal Tools Help With Mitigation, but Some are More Versatile in Glen Cove Homes Than Others.
With any water damage incident, there is a finite timeline to do the best for the property before irreparable damage occurs. Our fast response to emergencies can get powerful extractors and other mitigation devices where they work best to save customers time and money.
Emergency Services and Water Removal
Water mitigation for Glen Cove homes often focuses on the use of extractors and water removal tools. Because each damage incident can vary substantially, there is often a combination of available machines and extraction units like:
- Submersible pumps
- Trash pumps
- Truck extractors
- Light wands
- Wet vacuums
What Makes the Electric Submersible Pump Ideal for Extraction?
The electric submersible pump is one of the most heavily used extraction units for several reasons. The first of these is that it can run on a traditional power supply like portable generators typically required after substantial water damages. Its continuous and quiet operation allows it to manage thousands of gallons of standing water in areas of the house without losing prime or power.

Migrating moisture can Cause Substantial Structural Issues for Glen Head Properties.
After flooding, your home can be devastated. While the focus is often on the damage you can see, all the water must get addressed. We have powerful tools and strategies to overcome trapped floodwater in area homes.
Identifying the Presence of Trapped Moisture
With several tools and devices in our inventory to identify trapped water pockets in porous construction elements, flood damage in Glen Head homes can be more easily managed. While superficial damage and surface water concerns are quickly identified, these advanced devices are necessary for tracking moisture movement.
Drying Damp Pockets in Wall Systems
Wall systems can be a point where water can collect and become trapped. Migrating moisture seeking a balance between damp and dry areas of the property can use porous materials and open space in wall systems to achieve this equilibrium. As a result, moist pockets are formed that can be identified with moisture meters and thermal imagery cameras. We have several methods for addressing these trapped threats, including:
- Positive/Negative Pressure Systems
- Flood Cuts and Centrifugal Air Movers
- Wall Demolition and Axial Air Movers/Extraction
Water can easily become trapped in wall systems and structural cavities without the notice of the homeowner. Our SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho can help get these areas dried and restored to avoid damaging secondary effects like mold growth and degradation. Give us a call today at (516) 671-1919.

Mold Damage Restoration Can Require Soda Blasting Procedures
If moisture ever stays inside your Glen Cove breakfast diner for too long, fungi can develop on any of your building materials or contents that contain organic materials. If organic substances such as paper or wood stay wet for longer than 48 hours, mold damage could occur inside your place of business. A fungus only needs excessive moisture, an organic food source, the correct temperatures, and time to form and grow.
Anytime moisture gets left in an area inside your diner, naturally present spores could activate and cause your building to become contaminated. During mold damage remediation in Glen Cove, our SERVPRO technicians can utilize various specialized techniques and equipment to remove all contamination. Once a fungus forms, it starts growing in all directions, and it starts to release reproductive spores into the air. The spores can then float around the interior of your breakfast diner and contaminate areas that were previously unaffected by moisture or mold.
Once fungi have developed and are visible, our SERVPRO team's first step is to contain the affected room or rooms so that spores cannot spread across your structure. Then, we remove the fungal contamination from any of the affected surfaces inside your business's building. Next, we can use chemicals to help eliminate spores so that mold cannot form anywhere else.
Soda Blasting for Mold Damage Remediation
In some situations, the fungus could have grown deep into an item, and scrubbing and scraping methods do not prove effective. In these more severe cases, we can implement soda blasting techniques. Soda blasting removes contamination by spraying the affected region with pressurized baking soda. The process is somewhat abrasive, but it can be proven to be more gentle than sanding or other more abrasive removal methods. The baking soda also has properties that help neutralize any foul odors present within the contaminated items.
When running a diner, we know that cleanliness is one of the keys to being successful. For professional assistance with restoration services at your place of business, call SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho at (516) 671-1919 24/7. We can help you restore your company's building to the way it was before, "Like it never even happened."

Fire Damage Needs Professional Cleanup
Removing the residues left by a fire in your Jericho home is not a typical cleaning job. The skills needed are specialized, and the risks of managing the cleanup on your own are many. The incomplete remediation of a household fire can allow continuing deterioration of building materials and contents. Because the fire’s smoke and soot residues are toxic, returning to live in a home that still contains fire-related soiling also may cause health effects for you and your family.
Avoid the temptation to try to resolve the fire damage in your Jericho home as a DIY project. Our managers and technicians complete advanced courses from the Institute of Inspection, Cleaning, and Restoration Certification to prepare for projects like your household fire. Smoke and soot are the byproducts of fire, incompletely combusted building materials and contents, and they are corrosive to surfaces and significantly diminish air quality inside your home.
Protective Equipment Used During Fire Damage Restoration
SERVPRO technicians wear personal protective equipment (PPE) when responding to a fire scene. PPE shields against the toxicity of the fire residues and limits the spread of airborne and settled debris into unaffected spaces in your home. We often employ negative pressure air scrubbers to filter the air in work areas, containing the damage to smaller, more controllable sectors and venting contaminated air to the outdoors.
Soot Damage Cleanup
Our crews are familiar with variations in soot types -- generally dry, wet, and protein-based. SERVPRO vehicles carry different cleaners and tools that match up best with each kind of soiling. We also align cleaning methods that loosen and contain different soots for disposal. Failure to understand the characteristics of soot can worsen the situation. Smearing and spreading the toxic residues results when an untrained individual tries to use conventional cleaning approaches on fire damage.
Clearing the air of small, odor-bearing particles is nearly impossible without the right equipment and training. SERVPRO deodorization experts use a tiered system of deep cleaning, sealing, and chemical reactions to remove persistent fire-related odors. We have thermal fogging, ozone, and hydroxyl generating equipment available to eliminate, not cover up lingering odors.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho is ready to help homeowners clean up fire residues and odors professionally and permanently. Call (516) 671-1919 as soon as officials allow for fast, expert assistance.
Can Water Mitigation Efforts Save Cabinets and Other Assemblies In My Glen Cove Home?
6/16/2021 (Permalink)
Our skilled technicians have the expertise and state of the art equipment to get your property back in order after a water incident.
Specialized Water Removal Services from SERVPRO Eliminate Any Stubborn Moisture Issues in Glen Cove
Water intrusion from burst pipes or even a leaking roof from storms can affect many assemblies, including the ceiling, walls, stairs, cabinets, and floors because the gravitational pull spreads water far beyond the entry point. The confinement of the assemblies adds to the challenge when you want to dry or remove wet materials.
The presence of moisture in confined areas can trigger many issues that diminish the functionality, comfort, or visual appeal of your house. With the right water mitigation efforts, your Glen Cove home can regain its preloss state. SERVPRO uses specialized cavity drying equipment simplifying moisture management in voids. We also use advanced moisture removal techniques such as setting up drying chambers.
Specialized Drying Efforts May be Necessary in Case of:
- Emergency Services Water Damage
- Burst Pipes
- Ceiling Leaks
Water intrusion into enclosed areas presents unique challenges since access is limited when extracting or performing regular drying procedures. Finding a way to remove water with minimal demolition makes it ideal. With specialized cavity drying equipment, our SERVPRO technicians only need to drill small holes at the wall base to release water and circulate warm, dry air into the cavities quickening drying. With these systems, it is possible to manage the excess moisture absorbed by semi-porous materials such as those used to make cabinets, thus saving them from permanent damage.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho spares no effort when delivering water mitigation services. Call us at (516) 671-1919 for assistance that resolves any issue, “Like it never even happened.”

Whenever there is a water leak in your Glen Cove home, the water and moisture can quickly spread from the source throughout your house. Primary water damage to flooring materials includes delamination of carpet backing, swelling or buckling of hardwood floors, and metal surfaces begin to rust. If the moisture and water are not removed quickly, it can lead to secondary damage.
SERVPRO understands that you can avoid a great deal of primary and secondary damage with proper water mitigation action in your Glen Cove home. We respond within 4 hours of your call, and we are available 24 hours per day, seven days a week. Even if the water does not touch some surfaces, high humidity levels can cause secondary damage. For example:
- Ceiling tiles can moisten and crumble.
- Wallpaper softens and falls.
- Mold and mildew can begin growing in warm and damp locations.
Our fast response water mitigation approach aims at preventing as much secondary water damage as possible by removing all liquid water and drying the contents and flooring materials as soon as possible.

Water Restoration Service in Glen Cove
3/1/2021 (Permalink)
When your commercial property has water damage the SERVPRO team is ready 24/7 365 days a year. Water restoration is one of our specialities.
Why is water restoration so crucial in residential and commercial buildings?
Many clients are not aware why it is essential to clean up after water leaks and properly dry contents, flooring materials, and structural materials.
SERVPRO can provide water restoration services in Glen Cove, including recommendations on properly drying your home or office after a water leak from a burst pipe or overflowing sink. Insufficient attention and action often cause the damage to become worse over time.
How can the situation become a larger problem? For example:
- Water penetrates wood products and drywall, causing swelling and permanent damage
- Mold infestations may increase health risks for employees, customers, and occupants
- Day to day routines are disrupted by extended water damage left unattended
Many homeowners will mop up excess water and hope that flooring materials will dry naturally. Wet or damp carpets, moisture between hardwood planks, and water that penetrate the subfloor can create a great deal of structural damage to these materials if left unattended.
Contact SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho for water restoration services in Glen Cove and surrounding areas. We can help 24/7. Call (516) 671-1919.

SERVPRO Mitigates Fire Damage and Restores Home to Pre-loss Condition
Jericho, NY, is a hamlet located in Nassau County. It sits mainly in Oyster Bay but is also part of Hempstead. The townsfolks can trace their history back to 1648 when the area belonged to the Robert Williams Plantation. The settlers were mainly Quakers, having fled persecution in England. They desired to live a peaceful life as farmers. It was initially known as Lusum but was changed to Jericho in 1692.
Revolutionary War & Persecution
During the British occupation of the Long Islands, many Quakers suffered. British soldiers were often quartered in local homes, and the residents were to provide room and board willingly. As pacifists, the Quakers wanted no part of the war, which was difficult for them. Once the war was over, a peaceful life returned to the area. Farms and businesses began to expand, and the area prospered.
Jericho Grows
In 1788 the Quakers built a Friends Meeting House, and it is still in use today. The Quakers built a school in 1793. Soon to follow was a post office, a cider mill, and in 1905 the first public elementary school was established. More buildings and developments would follow rapidly.
The Underground Railroad
Jericho and the Quakers played an essential role in the Underground Railroad. Elias Hick, a local Quaker minister, was influential in abolishing slavery in the area. Elias Hick was a powerful force in the voice for equality. Hicks was so committed to the cause of slavery that his dying wish was that a cotton blanket would not cover him because it was a product of slave labor. His son-in-law, Valentine Hicks, and his family would continue as abolitionists. The building known as One North was once their home. It was built in 1789 and was a key way station in the Underground Railroad. The house had an upstairs linen closet with a removable panel, obscuring a staircase up to the attic where runaways hid until relocation was possible. It is a historical landmark that welcomes visitors today.
Jericho Cider Mill
In 1820 a cider mill began in Jericho. It produced cider for many years. One of the owner's descendants bought the mill around the century's turn. The mill's primary revenue source was Champagne Cider, an alcoholic beverage. Prohibition caused the mill to close in 1919. It was reopened at a new location late by John Hicks, a local farmer. It would change hands again, and today visitors can enjoy fresh apple pie and cider. It is a favorite among residents and visitors to the area.

Glenn Head Residents Know They Can Count on Us to Mitigate Damage from Flooding
Located in the Town of Oyster Bay, Glen Head is a quaint little hamlet with just over 4,500. Bus and railroad lines connect the hamlet to New York City.
Town of Oyster Bay
Oyster Bay is part of the metropolitan area of New York. It is made up of 18 villages and 18 hamlets, with one of the hamlets being named Oyster Bay. Six of these locations are along the shoreline of Oyster Bay Harbor.
Indigenous People Called the Area Home for Thousands of Years
Although different indigenous peoples had populated the area for thousands of years, when the Europeans arrived in the area, the Lenape nation was dwelling in western Long Island. The local band was known as Matinecook.
The Dutch Come to Colonize
With the European colonization came the Dutch and the colony of New Netherland. The Dutch West India Company purchased its first piece of land in 1639 from the Indians. The English laid claim to what is Suffolk County today, and the Dutch did not dispute that. But in 1640, New England settlers moved into the area, resulting in a land dispute with the New Englanders being arrested. The town of Hempstead was purchased from the Native Americans in 1634 by Englishmen. Included in that transaction was land the Dutch had purchased in 1639, but they graciously granted them Hempstead. Other settlements given to the English were:
The Treaty of Hartford
This treaty determined a boundary between the English and the Dutch claims. To the Dutch in "Oysterbay," this means what is now Cold Spring Harbor, and to the English, it meant the water area connected to Oyster Bay (today).
Cromwell & English Settlers
Smugglers were a problem when Cromwell was in control in England, and government control was lax. The Matinecook tribe sold some land to the English settlers in 1653. They paid for the land with:
- 6 kettles
- 6 fathoms of wampum
- 6 hoes
- 6 hatchets
- 3 pairs of stockings
- 30 awl blades or muxes
- 20 knives
- 3 shirts
- Peague to equal 4 pounds sterling
In 1660 England regained the Monarchy, and in 1164 Long Island and other land were given to James, the brother of King Charles, meaning the Dutch had to give up control of New Amsterdam.
A Settlement Becomes a Township
The settlement of Oyster Bay received its charter in 1667 from the New York colony. It then became the Township of Oyster Bay. The Indians sold the last piece of land in 1687 and were almost non-existent by 1709.
War Comes to Oyster Bay
When the American Revolution took place, the British controlled Oyster Bay. Glen Cove was incorporated in 1918, and after World War II, farmland was replaced by homes and businesses.
Home of Historical Landmarks
The Town of Oyster bay has 40 landmarks scattered throughout the town. They include places such as:
- Schenck-Mann House
- Old Grace Church
- Richard Davis Store
- Snouder's Drug Store
- Moore's Building
- The Printery
- Old Methodist Graveyard
- Oyster Bay Long Island Rail Road Turntable
- Ketchum/Underhill Farm House & Barn
It also boasts one of the world's oldest yacht clubs, Seawanhaka Corinthian Yacht Club. It got its start in 1871.
Sagamore Hill
President Theodore Roosevelt lived in Sagamore Hill, near Oyster Bay, from 1885 until 1919, when he passed away. It is the Sagamore Hill National Historic Site. The Theodore Roosevelt Museum is part of the site today. Roosevelt was from New York City and spent boyhood summers around Oyster Bay. When he was 22 years old, in 1880, he bought 155 acres of land on Cove Neck. Roosevelt had a beautiful Queen Ann style home built on the property in 1884. It was a magnificent 22 room home, named Leeholm after his wife. When Alice Hathaway Lee Roosevelt died in 1884, Roosevelt would go on to remarry. He then renamed the estate Sagamore Hill.
The Estate is Expanded
The largest room in the house, the North Room, was added in 1905. It holds all of the president's trophies from his hunts, gifts from foreign dignitaries, and books and artwork from their collection. One of the rooms has a water closet with a porcelain tub, which would have been a novelty at that time.
Summer White House
Theodore and Edith Roosevelt would make Sagamore Hill their primary residence. They had five children, and three were born there. During the seven summers he was president, he spent the summers there, and it became known as the Summer White House. Many dignitaries visited the estate. It was the location for the peace talks that helped to end the Russo-Japanese War. On January 6, 1919, Roosevelt died in the home he loved. The public can tour the residence today, which has most of the original furnishings. Constructed in 1938, the "Old Orchard" is the museum that chronicles his life. Brigadier General Theodore Roosevelt Jr and his family lived there for many years. It is a beautiful place to visit.

A Fast Flood Damage Response Protects Glen Cove Treasures

Glen Cove, on Long Island, receives special storm damage cleanup and restoration from SERVPRO
So many attractions await visitors to Long Island's North Shore.
As one of the most active ports to Long Island from New York City, Glen Cove has remained a staple and symbol of the persisting industry. Some of the most recognizable attractions of Nassau County are within the city limits of Glen Cove. Each of these landmarks, historic properties, or cultural centers is an attraction for those traveling to the North Shore and even long-time residents of Long Island's shoreline communities. With more than 27,000 residents, services like our SERVPRO restoration team stay active at all hours of the day to contend with storm, water, fire, and mold threats to residences and businesses.
Historic Properties
While much of the illustrious history of Long Island and the thriving Glen Cove port is within the 20th century, the area was developed and settled long before this boom in population and industry. Some of the most recognizable structures in the city's current layout are from its most formative years in the 19th and 20th centuries. Tourists can see these buildings for their architectural significance, though some are still used for active businesses today. Some of these properties recognized by the National Register of Historic Places include:
Old Glen Cove Post Office
While the post office structure for Nassau County and the city of Glen Cove has changed, the original construction for it remains on Glen St. to this day. Built in 1905, this three-story commercial property blended multiple popular construction styles of the time seamlessly between the ground floor and the upper stories. Brick façade complements the upper floors built from a combination of timbers and stucco. Today, the architectural firm of Smiros & Smiros occupies the building while the current post office moved to Glen Cove Avenue.
This was another one of the buildings in town designed by renowned architect Stephen Francis Voorhees in 1909. Much like the Old Glen Cove Post Office, the construction would blend multiple styles, especially inside the building. A combination of terra cotta, ceramic moldings, and red brick fuses Dutch Colonial styles and Collegiate Gothic into this single three-story structure. Today, the building has undergone renovations and repairs to be the current North Shore Historical Museum center.
While it now stands as a hotel on the North Shore, the Mansion at Glen Cove is a staple for those living on Long Island and on the travel checklist. Constructed in 1910, during a boom of large estates throughout the state of New York, the mansion stayed under the care and upkeep of the Pratt family until the matriarch Ruth passed in 1965. The building was sold to the Harrison Conference Center to become a renowned hotel and conference center.
The Beaches of Glen Cove
Long Island is widely recognized and applauded for its attentiveness to the upkeep of the beaches and shorefront. Glen Cove has three primary public beaches, each with its own unique charms, shops, and activities. Each of these portions of shore leads out to either the Hempstead Harbor or the Long Island Sound. The three principal public beachfront stretches include:
- Crescent Beach
- Morgan Beach
- Prybil Beach
Maritime industries are a substantial part of the economy in Glen Cove, which encompasses both fishing expeditions and boat tours through the Sound.
A Tour of Iconic Hollywood Influence
For only being a city of just over 27,000 residents, Glen Cove has had much exposure and time on the big and small screens. Major Hollywood productions and television series have found their way to the city to catch some of the North Shore's charm and feel on film. Some of the most common locations for filming have included:
- The Webb Institute – This current private 4-year college has been intertwined with the Batman franchises on multiple fronts, first appearing in Batman Forever from 1995 and then again for numerous scenes in the popular television depicting young Bruce Wayne's life in Gotham.
- Salutations – This is a large estate located on a private island right near Glen Cove owned by Junius Spencer Morgan III, heir of J.P. Morgan. The mansion on the property and its grounds were used in multiple films and television programs such as A Perfect Murder (1998) and the remake of Sabrina (1995.)
- Glen Cove Train Station - The original film Sabrina from 1954 would also have scenes filmed in Glen Cove at the train station, along with 1987's Hello Again.
Addressing the Immediate Effects of Flooding in Glen Cove Homes
With consistent groundwater concerns and the communities surrounded by more than the formidable Long Island Sound, the threat of flooding and storm damage is present every season. From the ravaging of Long Island by Hurricane Sandy in 2012 to powerful storms that pass through the region without warning, flood conditions develop at catastrophic rates. Our SERVPRO professionals understand these threats and stay prepared to respond to storm damage emergencies in the city and across Nassau County.
Emergency services are a phase of the recovery and restoration of area homes and businesses shortly after storm disasters. With threats like standing water and potential contaminants, our general contracting division and experienced technicians begin reducing hazards and dangers of the property ranging from collapsing structural materials to standing water with debris and potential contaminants.
Removing any pooling throughout the house can prevent the continuous spread and severity of flood losses, so it is a priority of our responding SERVPRO team. We have multiple water removal and extraction devices, including:
- Truck-mount pumps
- Trash pumps
- Electric submersible pumps
- Wet vacuums
The less that floodwater can migrate through the property, the less demolition and abrasive cleaning is necessary to return the property to preloss condition.
As challenging and overwhelming as flooding might be throughout a neighborhood, our SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho team is part of a large loss recovery team capable of managing extensive projects. Give our professionals a call anytime that disasters strike at (516) 671-1919.

What Can Homeowners Do to Prevent Basement Laundry Room Fires?
10/20/2020 (Permalink)
Inspect your dryer vents often for signs of lint buildup.
SERVPRO Professionals Offer Fire Restoration Services for Glen Head Properties
Clothes dryer fires account for as much as $233 million in property damage across an average of 13,820 reported incidents each year, according to the National Fire Protection Agency (NFPA). These costly disasters can be overwhelming for Glen Head homeowners if the cause is the ignition of lint buildup or an unforeseen electrical failure.
SERVPRO technicians receive extensive training and accreditation to perform fire restoration for Glen Head homeowners per Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC) standards. This firm’s readying and SERVPRO Corp’s comprehensive programs provide numerous educational tools that include:
- Comprehensive 15-day, hands-on training for franchise owners at SERVPRO’s corporate training facility.
- Certification training for technicians that covers both mitigation and restoration
- Online learning resources available for technicians and staff alike to improve their knowledge of current restoration industry standards
- Credit and noncredit courses are available to SERVPRO staff
- Continuing education forums are also provided to professionals in real estate and insurance
What Measures Can Homeowners Take to Prevent Clothes Dryer Fires?
Glen Head homeowners can perform a variety of cleaning and maintenance tasks that go a long way toward reducing the fire risk from their clothes dryers, such as:
- Treat flammable stains with care. Clothes soiled by oil, gas, or volatile chemicals, paint, and cleaning solutions can all pose a fire risk.
- Wash soiled clothes more than once and air-dry.
- If using a dryer, operate it on the lowest setting.
- Smother a fire before it can spread by keeping the dryer closed should ignition occur.
- Replace plastic or foil flex ducts to ensure quality operations. These types of vents can quickly collect lint and create upkeep challenges. When possible, replace accordion ducts with metal ducts that are secured with clamps or foil tape in place of sheet metal screws to minimize the risk of lint buildup in your dryer ducts.
- Keep the lint filter clean. Lint accumulation alone accounts for almost a third of all clothes dryer fires. Clean the filter after every load of laundry that goes through the dryer.
SERVPRO technicians advise homeowners to avoid performing repairs until a claims adjuster has evaluated your laundry room.
What Helpful Tips Aid Homeowners with Cleaning Their Dryer Vents?
While newer models of dominant clothes dryer brands can detect vent blockages and shut off to prevent a disaster, these sensors cannot always detect partial blockages that can still cause fires in Glen Head. When cleaning the vent in your home, keep these tips in mind:
- Disconnect the dryer and carefully move it away from the wall so you can access the back of the unit. Make sure to shut off the gas near your dryer if it has a gas hookup.
- Remove the duct from the dryer and carefully clean out lint and debris with a vacuum. Clean the ducts one section at a time, if possible, and reconnect them securely with foil tape or clamps.
- Take some time to clean the area behind and underneath the dryer thoroughly. Minimizing dirt and debris around the dryer means less fuel for a potential fire.
- Every so often, check the exterior dryer vent for obstructions like snow or leaves that can affect safe operation.
While there are many tasks you can undertake to prevent a fire, disasters can still occur for various reasons. Your local SERVPRO team is ready to send an emergency crew to your property within hours of your call to begin cleanup and minimize property damage.
How Do SERVPRO Professionals Clean Fire-Damaged Sheet Metal Vents?
Ventilation cleanup can pose a unique challenge. If your dryer vents are made of foil accordion ducts, replacement is much more cost-effective. Sheet metal vents, however, can often be salvaged with the help of agitation tools like whips, augers, and coarse brushes for light to moderate soot deposits. Disassembly and cleaning with a heavy-duty alkaline solution may be necessary for heavier soils.
Other areas of the basement typically require cleanup, even in the event of a contained dryer fire. Soot particles settle in nearby nooks and crannies, particularly in vents and appliances, spreading odors through the home, leading to potential device failures. Worse still, these residues become acidic upon contact with moisture, which can make a nearby washing machine particularly vulnerable to corrosion.
SERVPRO technicians carefully clean and deodorize your property with EPA-registered antibacterial solutions, including a wide selection of proprietary cleaners. Ventilation box fans that run at speeds of 3,000 to 5,000 cubic feet per minute (CFM) exchange air 40 times to remove the presence of chemical residues after thermal fogging.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho can return your home to a preloss state that makes you feel “Like it never even happened.” Call (516) 671-1919 to start the mitigation process.
Do Wet Carpets Need Replacing?
10/5/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO can salvage water damaged carpets in Glen Cove homes. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.
SERVPRO is a Water Restoration Provider in Glen Cove that Can Restore Items Rather than Replace them.
How does cleaning affect wet carpets?
A water intrusion event in your Glen Cove home can potentially damage textiles or carpets. Carpets are porous by nature, which means they absorb water quickly and any bacteria or dirt in the water. Porous materials also dry faster, which can be an advantage providing that SERVPRO technicians arrive before fungi or mold growth begins. Since molds can spread quickly, a moldy carpet is often non-salvageable. The typical timeframe that a wet carpet is restorable is seventy-two hours. Providing our technicians can begin work within this window, there is a strong chance that your carpet can return to a clean and dry condition.
- Sterile environments are those similar to a lab where there is virtually no presence of bacteria- whether harmful or natural
- Disinfected environments are more achievable than sterile environments
- A sanitary environment is likely to be the condition of your home before a water loss incident
How does a wet carpet return to a sanitary state?
The goal of water restoration professionals in Glen Cove is to return your home to its preloss condition, also known as a sanitary state. While carpet fibers are weaker when wet, they can often be more responsive to cleaning techniques using detergents, conditioners, and mechanical cleaning. We can effectively dry carpet and upholstery by setting up a strategic drying system using dehumidifiers and air movers. Finally, any residual odor left behind by a water loss incident can be tackled using deodorizers either in a mister or by direct spray applications.
- Returning textiles to a state where they look and smell clean
- Using chemical treatments to ensure that the carpet remains clean for longer
- Techniques that prioritize fast-drying while combating potentially harmful bacteria or microbes
Wet carpets are often cleanable after water loss without requiring replacements. Contact SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho at (516) 671-1919.
How Can Flooding Get Extracted from Glen Cove Restaurants?
9/1/2020 (Permalink)
Flooding can be overwhelming for restaurants, but our SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho team can help 24/7 by calling (516) 671-1919.
Natural flooding can overwhelm floor drains in your Glen Cove restaurant, making it vital for our professionals to utilize extractors to remove standing water as fast as possible.
Flooding can be devastating to entire Glen Cove communities when creeks and streams rise above their banks following prolonged rainfall. With so many quick-service restaurants close to one another along the main strips through our city, unexpected flooding can find its way into these structures and require immediate attention. A fast response from competent professionals like our SERVPRO team ensures that more significant damages do not require a lengthy shutdown of the facilities.
With natural disasters, the floor drains and water diversion installations in your restaurant can become overwhelmed, leading to flood damage in Glen Cove kitchen areas. Resolving the compromised drain and plumbing issues first requires removing any standing floodwater in the restaurant with several tools and devices.
Trash Pumps – Gas-powered extraction devices capable of moving solids and debris along with the water are suitable implements for natural flooding in your restaurant. These are portable and can get moved to different areas of the building as required.
Extractor Trucks – Our SERVPRO Green Fleet features extractor trucks capable of removing water at a powerful 300 psi. These removal tools can also remove solids and debris. The pumps get powered from the engine of the truck.
Specialty Wands – Wet vacuums are an everyday staple of extraction and can support multiple attachments and specialty wands to help with the final touches on floodwater removal. Squeegee wands on the tile floors of your kitchen area can be an excellent example.
How Can Water Diversion Implements Get Repaired After Flooding?
Assessing the damage to the drain and potential clogs can ensure that repairs happen if necessary. With contractors available on our roster, we can reinstall drains or repair these diversion implements as necessary.
Flooding can be overwhelming for restaurants, but our SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho team can help 24/7 by calling (516) 671-1919.
How Can I Clean My House After a Pipe In My House Breaks and Leaks Water?
8/12/2020 (Permalink)
Removing moisture while it is still a liquid can speed up the restoration process and help prevent secondary problems from taking place.
For Water Cleanup After You Suffer From a Pipe Break in Your Glen Cove Home Call SERVPRO
If a supply line inside your house in Glen Cove ever develops even the smallest crack inside it, several gallons of H2O can spill into your structure. Water will first follow gravity and start to build up on your floors, and then it will start to soak into your walls and other building materials.
How can you remove water from my floors?
During water cleanup operations in Glen Cove, our SERVPRO technicians start by removing moisture while it is still a liquid. We can use different pieces of equipment during the extraction process, including the following:
• Portable Extractors: Portable units can be used to extract tight areas that may be hard to access.
• Truck-Mounted Extractors: Our heavy-duty truck-mounted units have more power than portable ones and can extract a lot of water in a short period.
• Light Wands: Handheld tools can be used for initial extraction and for pulling moisture from glue down carpets.
• Deep Extraction Tools: Some tools use the bodyweight of the operator to compress carpets to pull out as much moisture as possible. These machines can be self-propelled or stationary and are best used when extracting saturated thick, shaggy carpets.
• Self Priming Trash Pumps: Whenever there are more than two inches of standing H2O present, a submersible pump can be used to remove it. Trash pumps are gas-powered and can suck up solids up to 5/8" in diameter.
• High-Pressure Pumps: These sump pumps are designed to use high pressure, but they do not handle sucking up any solids very well. High-pressure pumps are best used when extracting underground areas such as basements or parking garage structures.
• Electric Submersible Pumps: Electric pumps are the most commonly used in the restoration industry because they have a wide range of capacity, and they can move 100 to 18,000 gallons per hour through a 3/4" to 4" hose.
Removing moisture while it is still a liquid can speed up the restoration process and help prevent secondary problems from taking place. Call SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho at (516) 671-1919 24/7 because We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster.
How Can I Clean Up My Restaurant After an Accidental Sprinkler Discharge?
8/3/2020 (Permalink)
Commercial Properties in Glen Cove that suffer water and fire damage get "Like it never even happened." service and results
SERVPRO Techs Can Restore Glen Cove Eateries with Commercial-Grade Water Damage Repair Tools
Accidental sprinkler charges are more common than most Glen Cove business owners might expect. The current industry standard for sprinkler heads is a failure rate of 1 in 16,000,000. However, when a failure does occur, just one or two sprinkler heads, each discharging several gallons of water per minute, can leave businesses with a substantial cleanup job on their hands.
SERVPRO can respond to Glen Cove businesses requiring water damage repair in as little as several hours after the initial contact.
Preventing Accidental Sprinkler Discharges
- Have the plumbing for your sprinkler heads inspected regularly. Corrosion in pipes is one of the major causes of accidental discharges. Many businesses mitigate this by filling pipes with nitrogen to prevent oxygen from deteriorating the plumbing when it is dry.
- Consider installing sprinkler head guards to minimize safety concerns from mechanical failures. These devices are most effective in commercial environments with high rates of foot traffic, which can increase impact risk.
- Prevent freezing pipes from building pressure in your sprinkler system by adding an approved antifreeze solution, insulating plumbing, or making use of electric heat tracing.
SERVPRO’s Structural Drying Process
After extracting water from your commercial property with such tools as rovers and portable extractors, SERVPRO technicians prepare the affected space for drying with centrifugal air movers and dehumidifiers.
Air movers are typically placed every 10 to 16 linear feet along the length of the affected space, but positioning can vary based on the material being dried. For walls, air movers are placed at 45-degree angles to pull moisture into the air for dehumidifiers to absorb and replace with warm, dry air.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho serves local businesses with cleanup and restoration services that make your business look, “Like it never even happened.” Call (516) 671-1919 to get the services you need at any time of the day or night.
How Can I Prepare My Property for Flood Damages?
7/23/2020 (Permalink)
Storm Water Can Create Havoc in Your Glen Head Residence. Seek Help from SERVPRO!
Disaster Mitigation Professionals Mitigate Flood Damage in Glen Head Residences for Both Structures and Contents
Flooding is one of the most ubiquitous natural disasters in the United States today. Glen Head residents who have suffered such damages are well aware of the significant costs created by debris, pests, sewage, and water damage created by floodwaters. One inch of water can cause as much as $25,000 in damages to a home.
The restoration technicians at SERVPRO are available 24 hours a day, seven days a week, to remove flood damage from Glen Head properties and return homes to a preloss state. SERVPRO emergency response crews can begin the cleanup process in as little as four hours after you call.
How Do I Determine Whether or Not I Live in a Flood Zone?
Glen Head homeowners can access local flood maps to determine their flood risk. The Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA) keeps an online flood map of the United States open for public use.
Here is how to read the map to determine your area’s general flood risk:
- First, enter your location. This entry can be a city or ZIP code. You can then view the web map and even find reports for your area’s flood history.
- To determine the flood risk in your area, the FEMA Flood Map Service uses a variety of zone markings that indicate both risk levels and infrastructure relevant to flood management, including bridges, levees, and dams.
- Flood zone risk is coded as follows:
- Blue zones are 1% annual chance regions. In other words, FEMA expects these areas to see significant flooding at least once every century. FEMA considers this a high-risk designation and advises homeowners to floodproof their properties.
- Orange zones are 0.2% annual chance zones–that is, significant flooding is expected to occur here at least once every 500 years. This occurrence may seem unlikely to happen in your lifespan, but the truth is that every single region of the United States, no matter how arid, experiences flooding.
- Yellow zones indicate an undetermined flood risk. You may need to do more research to find out more about a yellow zome’s flood history.
- Blue zones with red stripes are regulatory floodways usually composed of rivers and surrounding floodplains. Homes that are built in or near these areas should exercise great caution to minimize the impact that flooding can cause in these regions.
How Can I Prepare My Home for Flooding?
There are numerous renovation options you can undertake that can reduce the impact of flood damage for your Glen Head property. These can include:
- Install a sump pump or foundation vents. Sump pumps are mostly used to remove water from basements. Choose a model with a battery backup to ensure that it can operate after the power goes out.
Foundation vents, meanwhile, allow floodwater to pass through your foundation instead of pooling around it. This floodproofing tactic can alleviate the significant amount of pressure created by accumulated floodwaters. - Use check valves on your home’s pipes. The pipes entering your home should have valves installed to prevent sewage from backing up into your drains and fixtures. Gate valves typically provide a tighter seal for this purpose than flap valves.
- Elevate your electrical switches, outlets, and wiring. Keep electrical components on your property at least 12 inches above flood level. This step can minimize the risk of an electrical shock during a flood.
- Keep some space between mulch and siding. Consistent contact with wet mulch can eventually cause your home’s siding to rot. Once this occurs, it is much easier for floodwaters and other types of damage to penetrate your structure. Keeping some space between mulch on your property and your siding keeps the base of your home dry.
- Make use of sealants and coatings. This floodproofing strategy protects your home with an outer coating of water-resistant paints and sealants that prevent water from seeping into cracks and crevices.
How Do SERVPRO Professionals Mitigate Flood Damage?
Flood damage requires a different process for mitigation and restoration than the typical home water damage situation due to the presence of contaminants and debris in the water. Solid waste, pests, chemical runoff, and other items must be removed from the property before structural drying can begin in earnest.
Porous materials like carpet and mattresses typically require disposal with the assent of homeowners and insurance adjusters due to safety concerns. SERVPRO technicians focus on thorough sanitation before commencing with structural drying to prevent the spread of mold, microbes, and other potential contaminants through the air.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho provides mitigation and restoration services that make disaster-affected homes look, “Like it never even happened.” Call (516) 671-1919 to begin the cleanup process within hours, at any time of the day or night.
How Long Am I Out of My House After a Fire?
7/16/2020 (Permalink)
Our professionals have state of the art equipment to clean up and restore your home so you can return safely after a fire.
For a Quick, and Safe Return to Your Glen Cove Home After a Fire, Call SERVPRO
Why SERVPRO?
SERVPRO restoration teams train extensively to remediate fire damage in Glen Cove homes. Our teams respond faster than many other agencies, so our work starts before other companies can even arrive at your home.
The Damage Looks Pretty Bad, What Happens First?
The team leader identifies every item too damaged to repair or restore and determines the shortest path out of your home. Specialists then lay down plastic sheeting to avoid crushing soot and other burned particles into the carpets and flooring. As they remove all of the debris (paper, furniture, appliances, etc.), the team leader examines the structure (walls, floors, and ceilings) for damage.
Here, the team takes on multiple tasks to reduce the overall time in your home. As several specialists begin demolition efforts of property near the origin point of the fire, others start cleaning efforts in rooms and hallways where the only effects of the fire damage are the smoke and soot particles left as the fire cooled and stopped. Specialists start with dry sponges to remove much of the particles left by the fire and then move on to cleaning agents and soft brushes to break up thicker layers of soot for removal without harming either personal or structural property.
Can The Restoration Teams Rebuild My Home?
For much of it, yes. Our SERVPRO office has trained carpenters on staff. After demolition, our team can install new support structures, to include wall framing, hanging new drywall, and even replace load-bearing walls in some homes. The team leader makes certain that all work meets not just your approval, but meets the requirements of city, county, and state building codes as well.
To get started immediately, call SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho at (516) 671-1919 today. We are here to put you back into your home as soon as we can do it.

How Do I Get Rid of Water from a Burst Pipe?
6/18/2020 (Permalink)
Water damage in your home? SERVPRO can make it "Like it never even happened."
SERVPRO Has Powerful Water Removal Extractors to Fix your Glen Cove Home.
What causes a pipe to burst?
Water pipes transport gallons of water through your Glen Cove home each day. These plumbing systems can age and perform less efficiently over the lifetime of your home, leading to buildup inside the pipes. Buildup blocks water flow, creating unwanted pressure in the system, which can cause the pipe itself to burst when combined with weak joints. The water pressure building up inside the joints can force water out of them rapidly, which can quickly lead to pooling water. In a matter of hours, your home can fill with several hundred gallons of water. Our technicians work in the local area and can arrive at your property promptly to remove water and mitigate losses.
What happens to my home when a pipe bursts?
Sometimes the water pressure overall can dip, which has consequences to the rest of your plumbing system. Equally, the water that releases into the home can absorb into materials causing significant damages. To recover your house effectively, you can enlist the help of a water removal specialist in Glen Cove. SERVPRO operates twenty-four-hours a day and has experience working with the building materials unique to homes in the community. Our focus is to remove excessive quantities of moisture quickly before putting in place an efficient drying procedure that can help to mitigate against further losses like mold growth.
What should I do when a pipe bursts in my home?
- Shutoff water mains to prevent further release of water. You can do this by accessing and turning off the main stopcock
- Contact your insurer to inform them of the situation
- Arrange for a service from a professional restorer to remove water intrusion in the home
How can I document damages caused by a burst pipe?
It can be challenging to assess the extent of damage to your home immediately after a burst. High-levels of standing water and material permeance are hidden factors that can only be evaluated once initial emergency mitigation is complete. In a typical home flooding scenario, we use electric submersible pumps with sufficient lift volume and power to transport standing water away from home and into an open sewer point. Once complete, the risk of structural collapse lessens, and we can spend time performing an inspection of damages noting the material construction of your home as well as the spread of moisture. We document all signs of damage during the initial scoping stage, which is recorded in a digital inventory ready to be passed on to your insurance adjuster.
What kind of water extraction equipment do I need to remove water from my floors?
Water extraction varies depending on the requirements of your specific restoration. Semi-permeable floors like wood, tiles, or concrete can usually benefit from light-weight extraction wands. These are commonly known as wet/dry vacuums and can pass significant amounts of water by combining heat and suction. However, if your property is carpeted, we may need to use weighted extractors. Carpet fibers are very porous, absorbing lots of moisture. This moisture can be tough to remove from the inner layers of the carpet, mainly when thicker fibers are in use. Weighted extraction equipment exerts a downward force onto the carpet either through its construction or the technician's standing weight. By applying downward pressure to the rug, we can squeeze fibers and draw moisture to the surface for extraction.
Are carpets ruined after water damage?
The length of time between the event and the drying procedure is crucial in determining whether carpets are salvageable. Clean water can deteriorate over time as it mixes with other contaminants like microbial spores or dust in your indoor environment. In as little as seventy-two hours, a clean water emergency can degrade into a grey or black water contamination issue. With their porous fibers, wet carpets are ideal for spores to form mold colonies that can spread rapidly throughout a carpet. Equally, the presence of moisture can lead to delamination of the carpet. SERVPRO technicians have extensive training in carpet restoration. We can apply to condition or buffering techniques to ensure that carpets return to a preloss condition providing that water exposure time is kept low.
How Can I Restore Wet Carpets
- Precondition and thoroughly dry the carpet using extractors and dehumidification
- Inspect the mat and perform spot cleaning to remove any residual markings or visible damages
- Use a rotary machine to buffer the fibers of the carpet and return it to its preloss condition
Burst pipes can occur at any time, and the longer the water remains, the higher the chance is of sustaining permanent damage to flooring or contents. Contact SERVPRO of Glen Cover / Jericho at (516) 671-1919 to arrange a call with our water restoration technicians (WRT).

There Was a Fire in My Kitchen. How Do I Get the Smell Out of My House?
5/29/2020 (Permalink)
Our professionals have state of the art equipment to clean up and restore your home so you can return safely after a fire.
SERVPRO Uses a Variety of Techniques and Products to Remove Odors in Your Glen Head Home
A fire in your Glen Head kitchen often means that there was a protein fire, especially if meat was the cause of the fire. Protein fires usually leave a minimal yellow residue. However, it produces strong, pungent odors. The biggest issue after a protein fire is odor removal. Fires that do not include burnt fish, meat, or poultry cause odor, but not to this extreme extent.
Do I Clean Surfaces First or Deodorize?
After a Protein Fire SERVPRO Fire Restoration Specialists Usually Clean Surfaces First
Each fire damage situation in Glen Head is slightly different, so our technicians assess the damage and create a plan to restore your home to the preloss condition. Cleaning surfaces right away is crucial because the longer the residue sits on a surface, the harder it is to remove. Technicians may need to clean protein residue off every surface in your home, even if there is no visible residue, protein residue seems to affect more areas than just the kitchen.
What Deodorization Techniques Do You Use After a Protein Fire?
- Remove the odor source- if the burnt salmon is on the stove, get rid of it quickly.
- Mask the odor with masking agents that cover the malodor with more pleasing scents.
- Combine odor particles with pairing agents that either neutralize (wet fogging) or absorb the odor (thermal fogging).
- Use enzyme digesters to break down the organic protein molecules that do not smell like CO2 and H2O.
- Clean the air with air purification equipment using filters and ventilation fans.
SERVPRO technicians work quickly to remove unwanted protein smoke residue while incorporating deodorization techniques. We make it, "Like it never even happened."

Why Do I Need To Clean My Home After A Pipe Bursts?
5/21/2020 (Permalink)
Homeowners have to deal with many things which may include water damage. Contact SERVPRO right away.
SERVPRO Helps Ensure Water Cleanup Exercises in Glen Cove Address All Underlying Issues that Lead to Problems after Water Spills
It may seem absurd that you have to do extensive cleaning around your Glen Cove home when a pipe releases gallons of clean water that flows all over your house. However, a combination of several factors necessitates cleaning to restore the property to its preloss state.
What typical reasons compel people to perform water cleanup in their Glen Cove homes?
- For the safety of the occupants.
- To ensure a comfortable stay.
- To protect the structure or contents.
As the water pools around on hard floor surfaces such as tiles or concrete, it leaves them slippery, increasing the chances of slip-and-fall accidents around the house. Water intrusion also sparks microbial growth, especially if moisture management is postponed. Microbial growth can lead to respiratory issues if left to progress unhindered.
Once water spills, evaporation starts immediately, which raises the humidity levels inside the house. At best, it is uncomfortable to stay in a house once relative humidity exceeds 60%. Bad odor can also develop in the house, especially when materials such as rugs or carpets are left wet for too long. When our SERVPRO technicians clean up your house, we can preempt the problems, guaranteeing your family a comfortable stay.
How does cleaning stop water from damaging the structure?
Water can cause materials to deteriorate in many ways. For instance, the cellulose in wood readily absorbs water leading to structural changes such as warping or swelling. Water exposure also causes many other problems in different materials, including:
- Rotting
- Mold development
- Rusting
- Discoloration and staining
The cleaning process removes standing water from the structure and manages the humidity levels in the air. If cleaning agents are utilized, their antibacterial and antimicrobial properties help limit microbial growth. Therefore, it is possible to stop or at least minimize the intensity of the problems that develop, unlike a case where nothing is done after the water spill.
Why involve someone else to do the cleaning?
The prospect of removing pools of uncontaminated water and then cleaning the house may not seem daunting. However, several reasons can compel you to consider involving a team of professional restorers like:
- Lack of the right of cleaning tools.
- To guarantee the safe use of cleaning products.
- To expedite the process.
What you might consider a simple water removal process can turn into backbreaking work when using mops and buckets. Drying the wet materials is even more difficult because it works through evaporation, and opening windows and doors is not an optimal solution. Our SERVPRO technicians use wet vacs to remove the water then we set up powerful air movers and dehumidifiers to manage the drying process cutting down the effort and time it takes to complete the job.
Away from efficiency, a professional team also helps guarantee your safety during the cleanup process. The process of cleaning your home after a water spill can pose some risks, although they might not be apparent. For instance, a simple task such as mixing cleaning products can lead to injury if you mix ammonia and chlorine bleach due to the production of harmful chlorine gas. The spilled water might reach power outlets leading to electrocution if you step into the house without protective wear. Professionals are prepared to tackle these risks because of their training and experience dealing with similar loss sites.
What is involved in cleaning a house after a water intrusion?
If it is the first time dealing with a burst water pipe or other severe water spills, you might not have a true picture of what you are dealing with until you start performing the cleanup. Unfortunately, such an approach leads to delaying or missing some of the initial preventive steps that help keep the loss manageable. For most water spills, these actions are typical, so you should make plans on how to complete them before starting the cleanup.
- Removing the water
- Cleansing surfaces
- Drying materials
- Deodorization
Knowing the steps you need to take beforehand helps in planning, and in some cases, you can take the initiative to optimize the process. For instance, instead of waiting until you finish cleaning and drying your house, then you think of deodorizing if you smell a bad odor, you can incorporate deodorization in cleaning. Our SERVPRO technicians mix water-based deodorizers with the cleaning solutions to ensure the areas we clean have a sweet scent. We also maximize water extraction, thus simplifying the drying process since extraction is 1200 times faster than evaporation.

• Electric submersible pumps
• Wet/dry vacuums
• Self-priming trash pumps
• High-pressure pumps

How can you dry my store effectively?
Moisture in the air and on surfaces can affect the health of your employees and customers. We can use structural cavity drying equipment to remove the moisture in your retail store. The equipment allows our technicians to direct airflow into wall cavities and hard to reach areas to replace the moist air with dry, warm air. This increases the temperature on the surfaces leading to a high rate of evaporation. Before we leave a business facility, we ensure that the client is satisfied.

What is the Best Way to Get Floodwater Out of a Sunken Den?
4/22/2020 (Permalink)
SERVPRO extracts floodwaters from basements in the Glen Cove area with advanced equipment like this portable submersible pump
SERVPRO technicians can remove the water quickly from your Glen Cove property
During a storm, there are numerous ways that water can enter a property in Glen Cove. When high winds damage a roof, the resulting leak is clean water, and as long as it gets cleaned up quickly, it poses no threat to inhabitants of the home. Groundwater is a far more severe issue. When this type of floodwater enters a home, it can have all kinds of bacteria, chemicals, and often sewage. Avoid coming into contact with it and get restoration services started as soon as possible.
What Should I Expect with Flood Damage Cleanup in My Home?
Flood damage in a Glen Cove den had numerous issues for SERVPRO technicians to address. Roughly an inch of water entered the home and quickly migrated into furnishings, flooring, and the structure. The technicians tested the water upon arrival to determine the nature of any bacteria or the presence of sewage (known as black water), so they could choose the proper cleaning agents to disinfect the worksite and make the cleanup process safer.
Part of Flood Loss Cleanup is Removal of Loss Items
The low-seated couch and loveseat in the den absorbed water from the wet carpet into the frame and stuffing and made them non-restorable as most porous items that take in black water cannot get returned to a sanitized condition for reuse. This meant they required removal as a loss with permission from the homeowner. Fortunately, a number of items had restoration potential. A solid wood coffee table got removed to another area for drying and cleaning. The accent pillows on the sofa remained dry and got moved outside the worksite with other items for cleaning and disinfection. The homeowner was pleased to find out the foosball table could get saved through washing with mild cleaners.
Frequently Seen Structural Damage After Flood Loss
Once water enters a home, the damage begins as it migrates and penetrates flooring and wicks into sheetrock. After quickly moving out the furnishings, the technicians scoped the den to determine all areas of water migration. They found it several inches into the sheetrock and wainscotting around the room. The techs measured over the water line on the walls and cut off the sheetrock several inches. This assists in drying the interior wall spaces.
Carpet wet from groundwater needs specific handling.
- Once black water gets found within the carpet, it requires removal and disposal as a biohazard.
- Due to the heaviness of wet carpet, the techs extract the water to make it safe to move.
- Once the maximum amount of moisture gets extracted, they cut the carpet into strips to make it easy to handle. This action exposes the concrete substrate, which needs attention to ensure it dries completely.
What is the Fastest Way to Dry Flood Damage in a Home?
Floodwater brings elevated humidity to the loss area that needs multiple pieces of equipment to remedy. SERVPRO technicians carry in different types of devices to deal with the moisture in the den.
- Portable pumps to pull as much water up as possible off most surfaces
- Rovers are valuable for removing the water from the carpet before disposal
- Squeegees work to push remaining water off the concrete
- Air movers blow at high speed and cause a chain reaction that results in embedded moisture in the concrete to rise
- Dehumidifiers seize this water vapor and remove it
- Monitoring during the entire drying process to maintain timelines and achieve drying goals
Handling Concerns for Electronics Exposed to Floodwater
After items such as the television and stereo equipment had exposure to the flood loss, the homeowner had concerns about their safety for reuse. Because it is not safe to test electronics with probable water exposure, the technicians arranged for a local industry expert to inspect the devices for the homeowner to reuse or if any repairs were necessary.
How to Removal Water Odors in a Home
Floodwater brings its own musty odor and may be made worse due to sewage or other elements in the water. Drying the property goes a long way towards lessening the foul scents in the home; however, the deodorizing cleaning agents also assist in the removal of any residual water odors. The use of antibacterial and antimicrobial cleaners as needed If needed, the technicians can use equipment such as air scrubbers and hydroxyl generators to capture any remaining airborne droplets and neutralize them. After the completion of these actions, the property is ready for the needed repairs to bring the den to its pre-water loss condition.
Flood damage needs immediate attention. Call SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho at (516) 671-1919 for rapid action to restore your home and property.
Did a Leaking Water Heater Damage Your Glen Cove Home?
4/15/2020 (Permalink)
Water heaters are a common source of water damage inside the home. SERVPRO can extract and remove the water and dry your home.
The Benefits of Professional Water Removal in Glen Cove Homes
There are so many ways that water damage can hit a house. Some of the most common events include hot water tank failures, supply line leaks to appliances such as the fridge or washing machine, and plumbing issues. All these events have in common is they need cleanup efforts to begin as early as possible to lessen loss to the structure and contents.
There are many perks for bringing a professional restoration service in for water removal in a Glen Cove property. One of the biggest is that it is almost impossible to do a comparable cleanup job using consumer-grade equipment and products.
Differences in Setup
The techs scope the loss area to determine problem areas. We also place a barrier between furnishings with stained legs and wet carpet to stop the potential for any bleeding of the stain onto the damp carpet.
Differences in Water Extraction
Homeowners that own wet/dry vacs can get ahead of the water loss in their homes. However, this machine type does not have the pulling power of the portable pumps and other water removal equipment that SERVPRO techs bring to the site. The certified techs know that the more moisture that gets pulled up lessens the needed drying time.
Differences in Drying Equipment
When a homeowner has a wet carpet and sets up multiple fans to blow on it, the tops of the fibers may feel dry to the touch after a time. Should carpet's bottom backing and padding still retain moisture, a host of issues may develop from mold to unrepairable damage to the materials from prolonged exposure. SERVPRO techs use centrifugal air movers en masse to deliver high-velocity airflow. This airflow causes a reaction that forces embedded moisture to rise where the nearby dehumidification equipment is ready to port it away. Specialized drying devices and methods such as floating the carpet or drying mats to save expensive hardwood flooring give results that home-based efforts cannot attain.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho at (516) 671-1919 for professional water removal of any size in your home. The certified techs arrive quickly and make the loss to the property, "Like it never even happened."

Fire Damage Glen Cove – Removing Smoke Residue
4/3/2020 (Permalink)
Homeowners have to deal with many things which may include fire damage. Contact SERVPRO right away.
Cleaning Household Goods Soiled by Smoke and Soot a Major Aspect of Fire Damage Mitigation Services in Glen Cove
A fire in your home is a stressful event that affects the entire family. There is the damage caused by the fire, often in a kitchen over the stove. The countertops and cupboards may be charred and need to be replaced. Air currents carry smoke residue from the fire to every room in the house. Smoke residue deposits are more substantial near the source of the fire, and the type of fire determines the kind of residue left on surfaces.
SERVPRO has certified technicians on staff to handle fire damage situations in Glen Cove and encompassing towns and villages close by. We train our team to deal with all types of fire situations and smoke residues. Our teams are available 24 hours a day and seven days a week. Our team manager is usually on-site within four hours of your call. In addition to damage from the fire and smoke residue, there is the damage caused by the fire crew. There could be water damage or chemical damage depending on the type of fire.
Avoid Rubbing Surfaces with Deposits of Smoke Residue
Every fire is different in terms of how hot it burns and what is burning. Some fires that burn hot produce little residue, while smoldering fires produce lots of smoke residue. Grease fires produce greasy organic material, while wood fires produce dry material.
Many homeowners attempt to clean up after a fire. This action is a natural tendency. In emergencies, many want to do something constructive, some want to save money, and others are concerned about personal possessions that have much value.
In SERVPRO's experience, homeowners can do more damage by attempting cleaning. Whenever homeowners use the wrong cleaning products to clean up smoke residues, owners can cause the residue to smear and penetrate the material. Greasy residue must be dissolved and wiped away, while dry smoke residue particles can be vacuumed.
Call SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho at (516) 671-1919, we can quickly assess the situation, discuss the fire type and damage with the firemen and your insurance adjuster. Our organization can begin restoration of your home after a fire and return it to its original condition, "Like it never even happened."

Why SERVPRO Is The Leader In Glen Cove After A Water Loss

We used our evolution LGR dehumidifier to capture the remaining water vapor in this home. We can help you prevent further damage also.
Cost-Effective Restoration of Water Damage Loss in Glen Cove
Of the many problems that affect households, water damage can prove costly to restore, especially if restoration efforts are mishandled. SERVPRO can help minimize some costs and help restore your home to its preloss state.
Several factors can exaggerate the costs involved after a water damage incident in Glen Cove, but the size of the affected area is one of the main determinants since the cost of damage depends on the affected square feet. After the initial water spill, the damage continues to spread as the water intrudes into different areas through gravitation-aided water flow, capillary action, condensation, and hygroscopic action. Such additional migration increases the area affected by the spill if it goes unchecked and thus adding unnecessary costs to the original loss. Our SERVPRO technicians can help by taking a variety of steps to stop widespread water migration including;
- Protecting contents with plastic sheets
- Expediting extraction of standing water
- Removing vulnerable materials likely to stain
- Managing humidity levels preventing condensation problems
In many cases, water damage requires the removal of materials for restoration or replacement purposes. The location of the material in question determines how difficult the process, which can influence the costs, involved. For example, baseboards are easier to remove compared to insulation, which is hidden within wall cavities. Our SERVPRO technicians inspect the affected areas and determine easy ways to remove the targeted material. For example, we make flood cuts to remove wet insulation and drywall without opening up the entire walls. Sometimes we forego the removal of any materials by using specialized extraction or drying equipment such as the injecti-dry system and drying mats to remove moisture from cavities.
Every item or material disposed of after water loss incidents translates to cost. Minimizing such disposal, therefore, helps reduce costs. Our SERVPRO technicians help save costly materials such as hardwood floorboards by using specialized drying techniques such as the use of drying chambers.
Any step that can help reduce the costs involved after water loss incidents is welcome. Call SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho at (516) 671-1919 to help. We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Commercial Water Damage Glen Cove – Plumbing Break
A commercial client stands to lose more than just the damage caused by a water leak when a water line breaks. Their business has to close until the water is removed, everything is dried, and repairs are made. The business may have to lay off employees, and customers cannot visit the site until everything vis returned to normal. A fast response by water removal specialists and construction repair contractors can reduce the loss significantly.
That's why SERVPRO provides commercial water damage services in Glen Cove and surrounding areas. We know how important it is to get to the job site and begin recovery to limit the time your business is offline. We are available on a 24 /7 day a week basis and usually can be onsite in less than 4 hours. A water line joint that blows out inside a wall can deliver hundreds of gallons of water in a few.
What Moisture Mitigation Work Needs to be Completed
One of the first steps SERVPRO takes when the team arrives onsite is to assess the situation, remove the source of the water damage, and there are no electrical or other hazards that might be dangerous to employees and our team members. If the water leak is inside a wall, which many are, we can remove the drywall to expose the water pipe for repairs.
Water can spread quickly, and in many cases, water seeps behind baseboards, into walls, under carpeting, and into the underpad. If we do not remove all sources of moisture, our experience tells us that these areas can be a future source of microbial growth and odors. If the carpet begins to delaminate (the backing separates from the carpet fibers), the carpet must be replaced.
We may need to remove baseboards and make a one-foot flood cut in the drywall, especially near the water leak, to gain access to water and moisture inside the walls. We remove all of the moisture using directed air movers to evaporate the moisture and dehumidifiers to remove the humidity. Once the commercial space is dry, contractors can begin work to replace the drywall, baseboards, and install new carpeting and underpad.

Water removal is rarely as simple as straightforward as Glen Head homeowners might like, but our experienced restoration professionals can help with an array of premier equipment and effective techniques. Extracting water from the house refers to more than the problematic standing water that could exist after a flood, so recognizing the stages of water removal can help our customers to maintain an understanding of the progress of our drying efforts.
Even before our SERVPRO professionals have discussed the full scope of the job and what is necessary for flooding removal in your Glen Head home with the homeowner and the insurance adjuster, initial removal techniques can begin. Extraction that occurs shortly after our team first gets notified of a disaster can help to reduce the total property loss. Waiting for long periods before contacting restoration, professionals can work against the restorability of the house.
In the initial phases of recovery, extraction plays a vital role in both allowing more direct drying efforts to begin and as a method of determining the extent of present damage. The need for debris removal and muck-out services is not fully appreciated until the standing water has gotten removed from the most damaged areas of the house.
Water removal from saturated materials is another critical element to mitigation, as this is the process that can be instrumental in allowing materials to stay installed when contamination is not a concern. In many cases, surface water saturation can get addressed with the direct output from centrifugal air movers and electric heaters. By manipulating temperature and airflow, our SERVPRO professionals can increase the productivity of evaporative drying. This immediate burst of warm air can also prevent cool barriers from forming along the saturated surfaces of materials that can slow the drying process.
Removing water from your home after a flood is a vital first step in gaining control of this loss situation. While there are many paths to clearing out excess floodwater, you can trust in the experience and cutting-edge equipment of our SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho team to help. You can reach out to our rapid response team 24/7 by calling (516) 671-1919.
Maskers and Sealants for Glen Cove Residents with Fire Damage related Odor Issues

How SERVPRO Works to Improve Air Quality in Your Home After a Fire Incident
Fire Damage Glen Cove
Sometimes the lasting impact of a property is fire is felt through the presence of charred odors that can linger in the air and contents of your home. Fire releases several chemicals in materials, some of which can also contain unpleasant odors. By opening windows and performing light vacuuming, you can remove odor-causing dry soot from the property altogether. However, wet soot deposits, which are usually greasy in texture and come from the burning of animal fats or synthetic materials, can be more of a challenge to rid from your home.
Odor-control is a big part of fire damage restoration that Glen Cove residents benefit from by enlisting professionals. Odor eventually disperses naturally over time once the removal of offending material or materials from home is complete. This may include carefully bagging and sealing non-salvageable items such as burnt curtains or by cleaning surfaces, walls, or ceilings using chemical products. However, the natural dissipation of these volatile particles can take a long time to disappear altogether. SERVPRO odor restorers can help to speed up this process.
Sometimes an efficient and effective method of odor control is to mask the odor for a period until the particles themselves disperse and become no longer noticeable. SERVPRO technicians can use odor-counteracting beads, which release deodorants into the air over time. As these solvent-based beads release deodorant, it counteracts the unpleasant smells left in the air by burning materials. Placing these beads inside a heating, ventilation, and air conditioning (HVAC) unit can be an efficient method for dispersing masking agents until the odor-causing particles disperse.
Walls and ceilings may be a challenge to the restoration of properties with high-pressure fires. Smoke particles can enter and bond with porous surfaces like wall-paint as well as the drywall beneath. These situations require intervention since the odor-causing materials are not easy to remove. SERVPRO can apply an odor and stain blocker to the affected materials, which uses a thick acrylic to seal odor into the wall itself. This surface can then be repainted without staining or odor reappearing.
Odors take a long time to dissipate naturally. To speed up the process, contact SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho at (516) 671-1919.

Cleaning and Refinishing Glen Head Hardwoods After Water Losses
Widespread water loss incidents can have a diverse impact on the hardwood structural elements it becomes exposed to in Glen Head homes. From cabinets and shelves to hardwood flooring, absorption often occurs more quickly than many property owners might think. While a swift response from our SERVPRO team can help to reduce the severity of this absorption and material degradation, lasting damage might have already taken place.
Water cleanup in Glen Head homes can encompass many areas of your home, but it can also include the restoration and recovery of specific structural elements and materials. In some situations, it is sufficient to dry and clean off any lingering residues from the surface layer of hardwood flooring and fixtures. However, it is also possible that these materials could require refinishing for more considerable aesthetic damages.
Cleaning
Cleaning off residues and soiling from hardwood materials throughout the home involves a range of our potent cleaning products and chemical agents. While cellulose in the wood can be the reason that flooring is so prone to absorbing standing water, the same concern exists with wet cleaners and higher acidic cleansers that can mar the finish of wood surfaces. Our SERVPRO team works to find the ideal balance between the present damage and the needs of the flooring or cabinetry to restore its original sheen and finish.
Refinishing
When marring of these surfaces already exists before our technicians can employ cleaning techniques and products, refinishing might be the only feasible route to making this water damage “Like it never even happened.” We can strip the finish where necessary and fall onto the skilled hands of our in-house residential contractors to repair and refinish these surfaces. Refinishing can almost always be more cost-effective and efficient than removal and replacement.
Restoring the hardwood in your home after a water loss incident involves more decisions and techniques than you might have thought initially. Our SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho technicians can help to restore and recover marred surfaces to get your home back to preloss condition fast. Give us a call anytime at (516) 671-1919.

What Can You Do to Prevent Storm Damage in Your Glen Head Home
1/19/2020 (Permalink)
Basement flooding is a reality that many of our past and current clients have faced. Should your home be affected, contact Team SERVPRO 24/7.
Stopping Basement Flood Damage in a Glen Head Home
A whopping 98% percent of basements are expected to see flooding in their lifetimes. Disasters can be overwhelming and stressful experiences to endure, but modern technologies and methods ensure that there are more preventive measures available than ever to keep your possessions safe and dry in the event of a disaster.
If your Glen Head basement has experienced flood damage, SERVPRO professionals stand ready to aid you within hours of your call. These technicians possess the tools and know-how needed to restore your basement to a preloss condition, including extractors, EPA-registered antimicrobials, and industrial-grade drying equipment.
Protecting Your Possessions
- Use waterproof storage. Plastic bins, especially stored on high shelving, can go a long way toward salvaging your possessions. To prevent water from coming in, seal these boxes with duct tape. For sentimental items, heirlooms, and similar fare, consider storing in the attic, if possible. For electronics and similar items, cover them in lightweight plastic and keep the seals as watertight as possible.
- Protect your furniture. Just 2 inches of floodwater can cost tens of thousands of damages for homeowners to repair. Elevation methods like cinder blocks can protect your furniture from water damage by allowing a few inches of clearance between floodwaters and your possessions.
- Check your basement regularly. Water damage can happen anytime, so implement measures available to prevent basement flooding before it happens when you can. Make sure to repair damaged floors, walls, and windows. Consider stocking up on sandbags or installing a sump pump to minimize damage to your basement.
What SERVPRO Can Do
SERVPRO technicians can get right to work on disinfecting and drying your home after flooding occurs. While not everything can be salvaged due to the dangers posed by floodwaters, these damage mitigation professionals strive to provide homeowners with peace of mind through tried and true methods.
If flooding is extensive, technicians have truck-mounted pumps available to remove high quantities of water quickly. They work in tandem with portable back-mounted extractors to remove water from hard-to-reach spots. Before drying can begin, technicians clean with EPA-registered antimicrobials to prevent the spread of microbes through the air.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho wants to ensure that your home looks, "Like it never even happened." Call (516) 671-1919 today for fast disaster cleanup.

Glen Cove Smoke and Fire Damage Cleanup and Restoration Are Cornerstones of SERVPRO Excellence
Fire Damage Glen Cove – Smoke Residues
Not all fires are the same, and the smoke from these fires is also different. The residue from different fires requires different cleaning approaches. Hot fires tend to produce dry smoke residues, while slower-burning or smoldering fires tend to produce wet smoke residues. Then there are the fires where food has been burned and may produce protein smoke residue. Fuel oil also produces smoke residues that require different cleaning methods.
SERVPRO has been providing fire damage services in the Glen Cover area since 1986. We have had experience restoring many homes and commercial buildings after a fire and are familiar with all the different types of smoke residues. We are equipped with state-of-the-art equipment and trained experts that have worked with thousands of customers.
The speed of combustion, the amount of oxygen available to fuel the fire, and the type of material that is burning determine the type of smoke residue.
Cleaning Dry Smoke Residues
Since the particles produced by a hot fire are dry, surfaces are not stained as profoundly and are easier to clean. Nonporous materials can be wiped and cleaned. Porous materials may need to be washed, repainted, or replaced.
Cleaning Wet Smoke Residues
Wet smoke residue tends to contain more aerosols, varnishes, and solvents. Particles can work themselves into crevices and can discolor plastic materials. In many cases, contents cannot be restored due to discoloration, smearing, or smudging on the surface.
Cleaning Protein Smoke Residue
Fires involving food products tend to leave a greasy protein residue that can be distributed throughout the entire home. All surfaces in the home may require cleaning and restoration. Protein combustion often results in a highly pungent odor that is challenging for elimination; SERVPRO can help.
Fuel Oil Smoke Residue
A malfunctioning furnace often produces this type of residue. Blowback can deposit spider tags in cooler corners and upper areas of a room, looking much like spider webs. Soot particles are produced and distributed throughout the home by the heating system. Technicians can first vacuum away most of these ionized, dirty deposits. It may be black or grey in color and greasy. It is usually easy to remove; however, the entire home must be cleaned and deodorized. SERVPRO can help restore your home after a fire regardless of the type of fire and smoke residue.

SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho is available 24/7 at (516) 671-1919 to help you restore your wood flooring.
Cleaning Up Water Damage in Glen Head
Sometimes a pipe bursting in a nearby kitchen or bathroom can soak your wood flooring. Hardwood flooring can warp or buckle after water exposure. The longer the floor is wet, the more damage you may incur.
If you are experiencing warping or buckling of your flooring due to water damage in your Glen Head home, you most likely require professional assistance. Contacting SERVPRO right away may help mitigate secondary damage, such as further warping or mold growth in trapped pockets of moisture.
Removing excess water quickly is critical; the least amount of damage occurs when SERVPRO technicians remove water fast. We’re Faster to Any Size Disaster. They pull excess water out of the floors by using an extractor and doing multiple passes over the area. Then, they dry the floors. Technicians consider the permeance of the flooring and the exposure time when creating a plan to dry the area effectively.
Wood naturally contains moisture, typically around 10%. Technicians use non-penetrating moisture meters to determine the moisture levels in the wood. They take readings in an unaffected area to make sure the moisture levels are consistent on all the flooring in the same area of the home. Moisture readings are from the wettest part of the floor to ensure that everything dries before moving forward.
Trained SERVPRO technicians use special drying techniques to dry the floors, mindful of vapor barriers such as finishes that may lock moisture in or out of the wood surface. Finishes impact both absorption and evaporation rates. Air movers and dehumidifiers are sometimes used in crawl spaces under the floors to dry from underneath while also used above the flooring, attacking the moisture from both areas.
Floors should be within 4% of their regular moisture content to be dry. If overdried, crowning may occur, the wood arches and creates a bow shape, becoming very difficult to sand out. There may be some cupping, meaning that the sides of the wood warp up in a cup shape. This often indicates that water absorbed from the bottom and sides of the wood. After the wood is dry, technicians may sand and possibly refinish the floor to bring the wood back to the preloss condition.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho is available 24/7 at (516) 671-1919 to help you restore your wood flooring. We make it, “Like it never even happened.”

We Are The Leader In Glen Head Water Damage Restoration
12/2/2019 (Permalink)
Our technicians removed the laminate floors, affected drywall and contents and then started the dry out process after water damage struck this home.
Debris Cleanup Can Reduce Restoration Costs in Glen Head
Among the many responsibilities and requirements placed on the administration and management divisions of our SERVPRO team, controlling expenses for Glen Head residents and their properties is vital. Every individual component of our response team and office staff involved in the recovery play a part in helping to keep costs low for the customer, but none have a more direct role in this than the crew chief. The leader of our field technician units has the authority to authorize preventative care and emergency services that ultimately reduce the cost of the restoration as a whole, such as removing loose debris and sediment.
Preparation is an essential component to every project we begin involving water cleanup in Glen Head homes because so much can vary from one site to another. Direct exposure of structural elements like cabinetry and ceiling tiles can lead to warping, swelling, and deterioration. In some situations, these areas can collapse entirely under the weight of the loss incident, creating a dire circumstance where our technicians must work quickly to prevent further structural loss. Cleanup plays a vital role in reducing this permanent damage, and we have several direct approaches to help.
Extraction
Standing water is a substantial threat to any exposed construction materials, contents, and other affected portions of your property. With structural degradation, debris can exist within this water that prevents the use of our traditional electric sump pump choice for water removal. We can utilize more powerful self-priming trash pumps to move water with solids inside.
Controlled Demolition
Our crew chief is responsible for the delegation of tasks when necessary, such as the deployment of our in-house general contracting division. These professionals can remove affected materials in part to prevent a more substantial full replacement of damaged surfaces and structure.
Direct Removal Approaches
There are certain materials and contents within your property that can amplify the destruction if not managed appropriately. Insulation above ceiling tiles and inside of walls can absorb moisture, causing this material to become too heavy for these weaker structural elements to contain. Our SERVPRO team can remove water damaged insulation with specially designed vacuum systems.
Saving money on restoration is not only important to you. Our SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho professionals have techniques and strategies for water recovery with the express purpose of reducing costs. Give us a call anytime disasters strike at (516) 671-1919.

How In-place Drying can Reduce Inconvenience during Flood Damage Restoration of your Glen Head Home
11/18/2019 (Permalink)
Your Glen Head flood damage is our focus, let us help you get above water.
Let SERVPRO help take the inconvenience off your shoulders when it comes to your Glen Head home flood.
A flooded property or room does not necessarily mean that your furnishings, carpets, and access areas have to be removed or displaced. Our restoration services focus on repairing issues with minimum inconvenience to a homeowner. In situations where property flooding is the result of a clean water supply malfunction, for example, leaking sinks, bathtubs, or pipes, it is possible to perform in-place drying. In-place drying involves minimal disruption to the affected area. However, it is only suitable when flooding is less than 72 hours and shows no signs of water contamination.
Homeowners that experience clean water flood damage in Glen Head may find it beneficial to incorporate in-place drying. These methods are less aggressive and involve drying carpets as well as subfloor pads without detaching or removing them. Furniture can remain in place while there is a reduction in the likelihood of delamination occurring. However, not all situations suit in-place drying, and they can be more time-consuming.
A SERVPRO technician can decide on in-place drying during the inspection of flooded areas. We begin by moving furniture into the center of the room and using truck-mounted extraction wands to vacuum moisture from carpets close to the baseboard. This process prevents water migration, which can become a severe issue should moisture enter wall cavities or penetrate the subfloor. Once the outer regions of the room are dry, your technician may test a small area of the subfloor pad to make sure both carpet and pad are dry.
Central areas of the home can then be further dried using a weighted extraction tool. Weighted wands apply pressure onto soft fabrics, which can help to squeeze out residual moisture. After every drop of moisture is extracted, SERVPRO can place air-movers with dehumidifiers to create ideal drying conditions. This equipment helps to reduce the amount of time for flood restoration work to be completed as well as ensuring both carpet and pad are thoroughly dry.
Clean water flood emergencies do not need to be a lasting disruption in your everyday life. Contact SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho at (516) 671-1919 for in-place drying options.

Glen Cove Fire Cleanup from the Sublime to Demolition--SERVPRO Has the Skills and Assets

SERVPRO Cleans the House of Debris from a Fire Damaging Event in a Glen Cove Home--even the Carpets
Various Approaches that Help Save Contents after Fire Damage Incidents in Glen Cove
Soiling through residue deposits, charring, and strong odor is common after fire damage affects properties in Glen Cove. Deep soiling may force you to throw away some items left structurally intact by the fire. However, using advanced cleaning approaches, it is possible to remove the residues left on the items, restoring them to the preloss condition.
Vacuuming
Vacuuming is an effective way to remove loose residues left on items after fire damage incidents in Glen Cove. It has several benefits, including removing soot, and dirt that may be difficult to deal with once a material becomes wet. It also helps clean some materials such as sisal or silk area rugs, which are readily damaged by other cleaning methods. Vacuuming can also serve a precursor cleaning method, removing loose soot from the surface of materials.
Bonnet Cleaning
If the fire incident leaves limited amounts of residues on fabric items such as carpets or upholstery, there is no need to waste resources doing deep cleaning, especially considering it might lead to other problems like dyes running or staining. Bonnet cleaning is the right answer in such a case because minimal moisture is applied. Our SERVPRO technicians evaluate the soiled material first to determine whether to use this method, pre-testing. We use it on the low-cut pile and low-level loop carpets. Its effectiveness is minimal for deep-cut pile carpets, and it is not suitable for Berbers or shag carpets.
Ultrasonic Cleaning
It is common for soot and other some residues to stick stubbornly to glassware and fixtures such as chandeliers. Vigorously agitating such items can remove the residues, but is likely to cause other problems such as scratches, which would ruin their value. Our SERVPRO technicians avoid problems when cleaning such items by using specialized immersion cleaning procedures such as ultrasonic cleaning, which utilizes tiny water bubbles to agitate the soiled surfaces. The bubbles are created through sound waves, so there is no chance of scratching the items. As these microscopic "balloons" burst, the released gas pressure erodes the unwanted elements from the targeted piece.
Cleaning contents affected by fire damage might require unique approaches. Call SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho at (516) 671-1919 to help. We’re Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Commercial Flood Damage can Ruin Structure and Merchandise in a Glen Head Bookstore
10/14/2019 (Permalink)
We can help you save the pages in your Glen Head flood damage.
SERVPRO can help with even the most particular items such as books in your Glen Head flood damage.
In spite of the Internet, many people in Glen Head still love to find and read a good book. Often, finding a classic in print helps share a beloved story with a child, which often reduces reading problems in school. Both new and used bookstores carry thousands of items in their inventories, along with other items.
Bookstore owners in Glen Head fighting commercial flood damage after a storm often need professional restoration experts to obtain the best possible outcome. Water of any kind and from any source is a book's worst enemy. Swollen bindings and warped covers give a good indication of the pages' condition – wavy and curled, discolored, and in some cases, tinted from the dyes in a cloth or leather cover.
Just as without books, there is no bookstore, the structure needs restoring to preloss condition, also. Our building services department carries out many tasks needed during the restoration of a business. Boarding up windows to protect inventory and furnishings from looters and tarps over the roof can keep openings from letting in pests and precipitation. They also help with restoring books and other documents, as well as fine art. SERVPRO can handle almost any type of flood damage that happens to your business.
Our goal is to shorten the time required for mitigation, restoration, and remediation and get your business back to operational status. Lyophilization is a method that involves freezing books and other paper-containing materials to dry them with little damage.
Because lyophilization must begin without delay, we highly recommend that bookstore owners create a READY Profile with SERVPRO. A Profile saves time by allowing us to access information about your business during a crisis.
Extracting silt and water involves both pumps and buckets. SERVPRO works in teams keeping efficiency high, so the work gets completed as quickly as possible. Elevating bare shelves and bookcases helps them dry fast because air currents can travel around them evenly. Wiping condensation off rarely needs to happen because our desiccant machines strip the air of water vapor.
We also provide odor control measures that eliminate odors caused by microorganisms, soils, and other debris. We use hydroxyl generators to kill airborne microbes and to eliminate any odor-causing particles. We can run these generators even when the bookstore is occupied, unlike ozone generators. It also causes no changes or bleeding of colors in fabrics.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho understands how unexpected store closings can harm your bookstore in Oyster Bay. We also serve Upper Brookville and East Norwich when flood damage and other weather events threaten your company. Call (516) 671-1919, day or night, 365 days a year, because We're Faster To Any Size Disaster and always arrive fully prepared. For Any Kind of Disaster to Your Glen Cove Home--Fire, Storm, Flood, Water, Mold, or BioHazard--Just Call SERVPRO
Why SERVPRO Restoration Services Provide a Better Coverage for Homes in Glen Cove
Restoration services encompass everything from initially assessing the extent of damage in the property, mitigating immediate losses, and then returning the property to its pre-incident condition. SERVPRO is a locally owned and operated business for water, fire, water or storm restoration. Serving the Long Island Sound region for over two decades has seen us develop our large loss recovery team into one of the most technically proficient restorers in the Glen Cove region. Quick, and cost-effective, we are ready to dispatch crews with the right blend of experience and equipment to your property emergency in as little as four hours of notification of loss.
Water
Restoration services involving water need careful handling. A relatively low-key water incident can escalate into a substantial loss situation without the ability to quickly source the cause of damage and trace its migration from point to post. Doing so not only ensures your home is protected in the short-term, but also guards against future incidents like mold, contamination, or the growth of bacterias and viruses.
Starting from the source of water damage in your Glen Cove home, our technicians trace moisture outward to judge the scale of your situation. Temporarily removing or blocking furnishings are vital mitigation tasks SERVPRO can carry out to mitigate losses. Controlled demolitions of drywall allow us to assess areas with restricted access. Where substantial barriers are in place, SERVPRO technicians can resort to thermal imaging cameras to continue our search.
A thorough assessment of the extent of damages in your Glen Cove home is essential to understanding what equipment we need to restore the property thoroughly. Sometimes, essential water extraction and dehumidification equipment provide a quick solution. Where there is a prolonged period between contacting restoration services and the initial leak we may need to bring in advanced structural cavity drying equipment to return the property to its preloss condition. SERVPRO has a built a reputation on being thorough in our assessment and restoration of water damages allowing homeowners to avoid repeat call outs or secondary issues like mold growth.
Fire
Uncontained housefires can spread smoke as well as odor throughout your home and contents. Walls, ceilings, and appliances can often be remediated relatively easy, but homeowners find that contents damaged by smokes or soots can be difficult to replace. Our department for the restoration of your contents employs a comprehensive range of solutions, that means you may not need to shop for expensive replacements.
In a fire, combusting materials release carbon monoxide as well as chemicals in the form of hot smoke. Smoke travels upwards seeking out cooler surfaces and leaving large soot deposits on them. As the smoke cools, many of those soot drop onto furnishings, documents, pictures and upholstery in your Glen Cove home. Water used in firefighting procedure can then set those soots into fabrics or other porous materials, making them difficult to clean.
SERVPRO operates a pack-out service for contents with medium to severe smoke damages. Your belongings can often be cleaned and deodorized onsite before being taken to a unique storage facility for safekeeping. SERVPRO storage facilities are sanitary with climate-controlled indoor spaces for your precious items. We can use immersion ultrasonic cleaning methods, where necessary, to get contents back to preloss condition before returning them to your newly restored home. During pack out, our technicians create a digital inventory of items that can be passed on to your insurance adjuster to help ease your claim.
Storm
SERVPRO operates large loss recovery teams for residents along the Long Island Sound during weather risk periods. Depending on the scale of damage, units can be a single trained restorer, to a team of water restoration technicians (WRT), applied structural damage (ASD) technicians and BioHazard teams. Harsh weather conditions require restoration services with a versatile skillset because the extent of damages can cover mold remediation, construction as well as water removal.
A large amount of work carrying out active recovery of storm damage in your Glen Cove home centers on mitigating further losses. Temporary barriers must be constructed to prevent further rain or floodwater from entering your home. SERVPRO can perform emergency board ups to secure the property as well as tarping roofs, brickwork or upper floor windows to limit the extent of the damage. Doing so allow us to begin work indoors faster without risking the condition of your Glen Cove property worsening overnight.
Inside the property, SERVPRO technicians can carry out mitigation tasks to preserve the integrity of your flooring as well as removing or blocking furniture in the immediately affected area. We can pump out large quantities of water using submersible gas-powered equipment before moving in with portable extraction units for areas with restricted access. Overnight, SERVPRO technicians place dehumidifiers to control the relative humidity and prevent mold damages which, in the right conditions, can crop up in as little as 48 hours.
Mold
A property that has sustained damages from a water or storm-related event is at high risk of suffering from post-incident mold damage. Usually, the signs of microbial growth are distinguishable by an unpleasant musty odor or visible in corners and on furnishings. We offer a professional, honest service for homeowners with mold damage in Glen Cove using up-to-date equipment that helps us to remove the infestation quickly while returning your indoor air quality to a sanitary level.
Microbial spores exist at a microscopic level. Agitation of mold-infested areas, such as with the demolition of contaminated drywall, can cause microscopic spores to become airborne affecting your indoor air quality. SERVPRO restoration services incorporate high-efficiency particulate air (HEPA) filters that can remove particles as little as 0.3 microns from the affected area. During the remediation procedure, our mold technicians can strategically place this equipment to contain the infestation and clean indoor air efficiently.
The most effective method in controlling microbial growth is by drying the property. A slow leak or roofing issue may cause moisture to return over several months. To prevent this issue, SERVPRO can repaint walls using a base coat of anti-microbial paints. Areas that have been disinfected and restored, like carpets, can be treated on both sides with biocides to reduce the likelihood of an infestation returning after service. During the drying procedure, our restoration service technicians can return to your Glen Cove home daily to ensure we are achieving the expected outcomes.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho are experts at returning a home to its original condition through restoration services. For water, mold, fire, or storm issues in your property, contact us immediately at (516) 671-1919.

Our Swift Response Can Save Your Water Damaged Home In Glen Cove

“Like it never even happened.”
How Does SERVPRO Remove Water Damage In Glen Cove Homes So Fast?
When dealing with a water damaged home, often the water has receded or been blotted up by the homeowner using towels or mops. However, excessive moisture remains on surfaces, wicked into drywall, baseboards and sometimes it has made its way into the subflooring.
The key to saving as much of the structure and contents as possible during remediation of water damage in a Glen Cove home is the removal of as much moisture as possible. This action is done, so the drying phase takes less time.
Our skilled technicians use different types of moisture detection to find where moisture has collected and let the technicians "see" if they need to remove portions of drywall, also knowns as "flood cuts" and baseboards to allow for adequate airflow behind walls to properly dry the structure.
We have different types of equipment for water extraction from a property. Portable pumps are fast and efficient to take from room to room to quickly move out water as a team.
Weighted extractor heads push down on surfaces and push water to the surface where it is collected. The stand-on Rover units are as agile as a Segway and can remove volumes of water; they are especially useful on carpeted surfaces where the weight of the technician works to push water out of padding.
SERVPRO spends extra time extracting water from events because the more that is removed before the drying phase, the less time it takes to bring the affected area to a state of dryness for further restoration. Our technicians are certified in the study of water vapor and air and use that knowledge when they are setting up the air movers and dehumidifiers to dry the areas.
No home has 0% humidity, and drying goals are established by using readings in unaffected areas of the home. When entire homes are affected, drying goals are set using known healthy humidity levels. After drying, our technicians deodorize and disinfect the affected areas to leave the home with a fresh, clean scent.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho is on call 24-hours at (516) 671-1919. Our emergency response team is ready to come to your home and use our knowledge and equipment to make flood damage “Like it never even happened.”

Black water from flooding is contaminated and requires removal. We use safety equipment and the right air movers and dehumidifiers.
Aging Infrastructure and Severe Storms Are Why SERVPRO Focuses Resources on Glen Cove Flood Damage
Just east of Hempstead Bay on the west end of Long Island Sound, Glen Cove has flooding anecdotes aplenty in the past few months. Whether your home experiences flooding because of a municipal water main break or torrential rainfall and storm surge, you need a reliable, professional mitigation and remediation services. Provision of these needed resources is an important reason why our company exists.
Water of All Categories and Sources Need Fast Removal
When water fills the lower levels of your home, the original source of Glen Cove flood damage is immaterial. A flash flood because of torrential rain or broken plumbing both sweep debris and contaminants into your house. Our Institute of Inspection, Cleaning and Restoration Certification (IICRC)-trained team of managers and technicians is prepared to collect, contain, and dispose of the now-contaminated water. Our ability to manage any quality or quantity of floodwater is why we are recommended to property owners by their insurance companies.
We Arrive Prepared
Well-stocked service vehicles and 24/7 on-call crews are why SERVPRO can respond quickly for your flood damage needs. As our crew chief or project manager evaluates the scenario, technicians wait to roll the pumps and extractors into your property. Fast action is one of the ways we ensure a successful outcome as the damage done by water worsens progressively. If excess water remains for more than 24 to 48 hours, mold growth and the harm it can cause to structures becomes more likely.
We Are Trained to Use Sensitive Moisture Metering Devices
As the floodwater evacuates, technicians begin searching for any water migration from the original area. We use thermal imaging cameras to locate standing water. If found, we select a controlled demolition technique such as punching weep holes or making flood cuts to release the fluid. Why SERVPRO uses moisture meters to sample structural components is to create a drying baseline, comparing the levels found in the affected areas with those found in unflooded rooms in the home. After the flooded area is cleaned and disinfected, we position air movers and heaters to create the correct balance of temperature and humidity to force absorbed water into the air. Dehumidifiers then capture the vapor for disposal.
Our mission as a community disaster responders is why SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho awaits your call for flood restoration, storm or accident based. Call us at (516) 671-1919 to arrange an assessment.

We Have State Of The Art Equipment To Restore Your Glen Cove Home
8/7/2019 (Permalink)
Using the right equipment ensures your home is restored the right way and prevents further damage.
Get Efficient Flood Damage Cleanup for Your Glen Cove Home
All homes in Glen Cove are vulnerable to sustaining damage after a natural disaster. Water damage from floods is one thing that comes to mind. It has not been long since a storm caused by the remnants of Hurricane Burry hit this city. Floodwater ruins the structure and contents of a home such as drywall, carpet, furniture, and belongings.
If there is flood damage in your Glen Cove home, create a record of all the destruction that has happened for your insurance firm. Some insurance policies do not cover flooding. Therefore, check with your insurer to know the reimbursements you qualify for. Take images of all the ruined structures and possessions and send them to your insurance agent. You should then assess the destruction in your property. Wear rubber boots so you can be safe from toxic materials. Flood damage can include some of the following issues:
Contaminants
Floodwater usually comprises silt, mud, and microbes like bacteria, fungi, and viruses. These contaminants can cause serious health problems if you do not clean and neutralize them promptly.
Damaged appliances
If you did not unplug all your electrical equipment before the floodwaters entered your home, some might have sustained damage. If items like electric heaters, outlets, thermostats, wiring, computers, and light fixtures were submerged, you need to replace them. You may salvage some electronics, but make sure an electrician examines them first.
Mold growth
If floodwater soaks into walls, floors, and furniture, it can cause mold to develop in dark, moist areas. Mold usually appears within a day or two of a flood and poses health risks.
Remember that the quicker you act, the better the chance you have for saving valuable items in your home. You can get started with cleaning up your home and restoring it to its former glory by contacting SERVPRO franchise professionals. Our water damage restoration technicians can clean up and dry your property to make the flooding emergency seem “Like it never even happened.”
As opposed to water damage from clean water, flood damage restoration requires sanitizing, decontamination, and deodorization of a home. Our water damage restoration technicians (WRT) have different equipment needed to restore a home to its pre-flood damage sate. We have powerful extraction equipment like portable pumps that remove water from buildings effectively to expedite the drying process. We also use air moving equipment to increase evaporation and dehumidification equipment to eliminate water vapor from the air.
Flooding can also cause your home to have unpleasant odors. Our SERVPRO technicians use deodorization equipment to apply professional products and treat odors. We can identify and remove widespread and overpowering odors using hydroxyl machines, air scrubbers, and fogging equipment.
After the unfortunate event of floodwater intrusion into your Glen Head, Jericho, or Oyster Bay home, contact SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho for flood cleanup services. Our emergency hotline is (516) 671-1919, and we are ready to assist you 24/7/365.

Our Technicians Discuss What Is Essential In A Glen Head Water Damage Scenario
If you enjoy attending a murder mystery event at a Glen Head dinner theater, you are sure to appreciate the efforts of our skilled Water Damage Restoration Technicians (WRT) when locating the source of a damaging leak in your home. Many of our calls require significant amounts of detective work because no major break or rupture is apparent. Rest assured we can find the problem and respond to all the damage flowing from it.
Small cracks in pipes, caulk, and hoses or malfunctioning pumps are frequently the cause of water damage in Glen Head homes. The moisture takes days or weeks for you to notice, and it is not uncommon for the seemingly minor water problem to hide a much more complicated damage scenario. Our team masters training in a variety of detection strategies. We then use this knowledge to locate pockets of hidden water and provide data for drying goals after the water cleanup completes.
SERVPRO crews take the time to accurately map out the dimensions of a water loss to avoid progressive damage or secondary complications such as mold growth. We use thermal imaging cameras to pinpoint areas where water collected and needs release and evacuation, perhaps in cavities between walls or behind the kickboard of a kitchen cabinet. Controlled demolition techniques permit us to access the water and allow for better airflow during the drying phase.
SERVPRO invests in moisture detectors, hygrometers, and other devices that measure the levels and extent of moisture saturation in structural components. We sketch out the dimensions of the water damage and use the information as we set up configurations of air movers, heaters, and dehumidifiers to reduce moisture to normal levels in your home. Monitoring the measurements helps us adapt the positioning of the equipment and gives us feedback on when we can phase out drying operations.
When SERVPRO responds, you can rely on our experience and training to focus on your crisis. You deserve a better option than a cookie-cutter approach to water damage restoration. We individualize each project by using the tools and equipment in our extensive inventory.
SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho is ready to uncover the facts and apply the solutions appropriate for your unique water loss. Call us at (516) 671-1919 for detection and resolution of hidden water damage.

Water Restoration Professionals Share Their Best Tips To Restore Water Damaged Flooring in Glen Cove
5/8/2019 (Permalink)
Water and hard wood floors don't mix. Water can cause cupping and also damage the subfloor.
How Does SERVPRO Handle Water Damage to Flooring in Glen Cove Homes?
Water damage feels overwhelming and no matter if it comes from an overflow in an upstairs bathroom, supply line leak or appliance malfunction, the water has a way of making it into the flooring. If it is not correctly cleaned up, the possibility of secondary issues such as mold and weakening of building materials rears its ugly head.
When SERVPRO responds to a call for assistance with water damage to the flooring in a Glen Cove home, the technicians' first consideration is the type of flooring. Different kinds of materials that make up flooring respond to water in different ways; consequently, the methods of treating water loss situations involving flooring vary on a case by case basis. We encounter concrete floors and block foundation walls most often in basements, and after drying, a powdery white residue may remain. The film is called white efflorescence that is cleaned easily using our professional-grade cleaners.
Composite and engineer wood floors generally are a loss when exposed to water for an extended amount of time, a day or less. Flooring crafted from hardwoods can be salvaged on a case by case basis. The length of time exposure to water affects the salvaging potential of the boards as wood absorbs water and if not dried promptly, warping and buckling follow.
SERVPRO technicians possess certifications that specifically address the restoring of wood flooring affected by water. Specialized equipment such as drying mats is hooked up to a wet/vac to create suction which draws residual moisture from the joints and the floor joists. This suction does an effective job of decreasing the drying time of the floorboards. After drying, some buckling or warping can remain. However, this can often be sanded and refinished, saving the flooring from inclusion as a water loss. If the seal on tile flooring is intact, there are generally few issues after a water cleanup. Our technicians use moisture detection equipment to confirm the baseboards and subflooring are unaffected and dry the areas where excess moisture is detected.
No matter what type of flooring we are restoring we complete the job by disinfecting the surfaces to neutralize odor-causing bacteria and inhibits mold growth. Large or small water losses, SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho stands ready to mitigate the damage after you call (516) 671-1919. Our technicians arrive within hours of your initial contact because We're Faster To Any Size Disaster.

Smoke and Soot Damage
12/7/2017 (Permalink)
This smoke damage was caused by a small electrical appliance. Burnt plastic is the main cause of the soot.
There are two different types of smoke–wet and dry. As a result, there are different types of soot residue after a fire. Before restoration begins, SERVPRO of Glen Cove / Jericho will test the soot to determine which type of smoke damage occurred. The cleaning procedures will then be based on the information identified during pretesting. Here is some additional information:
Wet Smoke – Plastic and Rubber
- Low heat, smoldering, pungent odor, sticky, smeary. Smoke webs are more difficult to clean.
Dry Smoke – Paper and Wood
- Fast burning, high temperatures, heat rises therefore smoke rises.
Protein Fire Residue – Produced by evaporation of material rather than from a fire
- Virtually invisible, discolors paints and varnishes, extreme pungent odor.
This photo shows a bathroom covered in soot after a small appliance caught fire and the plastic in which the appliance was enclosed in caused this WET Smoke to stick to the entire bathroom as shown in the photo.
This is what happens when water damage is ignored.

Christmas Tree Safety

Christmas tree safety!
The Christmas season is upon us. This means the Christmas trees are being set up and the lights are on and everyone is getting into the spirit.
If you have a real tree it is very important to make sure you keep plenty of water in the tree stand. A dry tree is more likely to catch on fire from the lights then a hydrated tree. Set a reminder on your smart phone on a daily basis to add water to the tree. We all have so many things going on in our life it very simple to forget the small stuff. to make it easier on you stop by any hardware store or home center and pick up a Christmas tree funnel. They work great. Leave the funnel in the tree and it allows you to pour in the water at about the 3 foot height instead of crawling under the tree every day.
